Softball Returns to Northeast with Pair of Non-Conference Wins

HTML Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2

WILMINGTON, Del. – Wednesday afternoon presented treacherous wind conditions for both teams to compete in their non-conference doubleheader in Delaware. The Kutztown University softball team prevailed though and combined to score 20 runs in its doubleheader sweep over Goldey-Beacom College with a 9-1 win in game one and 11-1 win in game two, both coming in six innings.

The Golden Bears (12-4) took advantage of seven Lightning (0-2) errors in Goldey-Beacom's season-opener, with all seven coming in the final two innings. Tied in a scoreless affair through four, KU put two runners in scoring position with one out. Bridget Newman plated the first run of the game as a ground ball ate up the Goldey-Beacom shortstop.

Krista Schauder hit a sacrifice fly, and KU's final three runs of the five-run inning came off fielding errors. Danielle Amato and Rachel Lawes plated RBI in the sixth inning, all of which were unearned.

Schauder and Lawes each had multi-hit games for the Golden Bears in the opener.

Senior Dominique Ficara moved to 4-2 in the circle and allowed four hits with four strikeouts. It is her 39th career win at KU, one shy of moving into eight all-time in program history.

The errors lessened in the nightcap, KU out-hit GBC 14-4, and KU pitcher Savannah Nierintz dominated in her eighth win of the season. In six innings, Nierintz allowed four hits and one run – none earned – with six strikeouts. She is 8-0 this year.

Freshman Asja Saito went 3-for-4 with four RBI in the nightcap. Her two-run single gave KU the lead in the second inning, as she scored on a triple by Gabby Tareila for a 3-0 KU lead.

The teams traded runs in the fourth, and KU broke open its lead to 8-1 with three runs in the fifth. Saito and Schauder each had RBI in the inning. KU ended the game with three more runs in the sixth inning with a RBI single by Lawes, an unearned run on a fielding error, and a Saito RBI single.

Sophomore catcher Justine Rossi was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.

Senior Colleen Smith walked four times on Wednesday, moving her into second all-time at KU with 88 in her career. KU Hall of Famer Steph Denlinger holds the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) record with 159.

The Golden Bears are scheduled to play Mansfield University on Saturday, March 21 in their home-opener, but KU's North Campus Field remains unplayable. Stay tuned to www.KUBears.com for schedule updates throughout the remainder of the week.
