KUTZTOWN, Pa.
Tynell Fortune and
Josh Johnson combined for 44 points to lead the Kutztown University men's basketball team to its first playoff victory in five years with a 77-54 victory over Shippensburg University on Saturday afternoon at Keystone Arena in the first round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament.
It marked Kutztown's largest margin of victory in a PSAC Tournament game in program history.

The Golden Bears (18-11), the third-seed in the tournament, advance to the quarterfinals to face second-seeded West Chester University (16-12) at Hollinger Fieldhouse on Tuesday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m.

West Chester won both meetings this season by a combined four points, including a four-overtime contest at Keystone Arena. It marks the first time since 2003 that KU and West Chester have met in the PSAC Tournament.

Ticket prices for Tuesday's quarterfinals are $7 for adults and $2 for students. PSAC students are admitted free with a valid ID from a PSAC institution.

An 18-0 run midway through the second half broke open a once-10-point game, and extended Kutztown's lead to as many as 30 points in the final seven minutes of the game. KU never trailed on Saturday in its impressive playoff victory, the program's first postseason win since its run to the PSAC Championship game in 2010.

Johnson led all scorers with his eighth double-double of the year, his second in a row, with 23 points and 11 rebounds. He shot 7-for-12 from the field and 9-for-10 at the free throw line in his seventh straight game scoring in double figures.

Fortune teamed with Johnson to combine for 44 points. Fortune scored 21 points and also shot 9-for-10 at the free throw line. He made his first nine free throws, and barely missed his 10th attempt as his rimmed out free throw broke a streak of 24 consecutive made free throws for the senior.

As a team, Kutztown shot 28-of-36 (.778) at the charity stripe.

Fortune has now scored 1,295 points in his career.

Kutztown's guards protected the basketball, as KU finished with just nine turnovers. Point guard
Austin Beidelman led the team with three assists along with seven points.

Defensively, Kutztown limited Shippensburg to 37.5 percent from the field and 2-for-9 from three-point range. KU senior
Tyler Brooks led the game with four blocks.

Three Raiders finished in double figures in scoring. Senior Dylan Edgar closed his career with 14 points and 11 rebounds on 5-of-12 shooting, freshman Justin McCarthur scored 10 points but was limited to 3-for-13 from the field, and sophomore Abe Massaley tallied 10 points on 2-of-8 shooting.
