KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The 15th ranked Kutztown University wrestling team compiled a 32-point lead through the first seven bouts on its way to a 34-8 victory over East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday evening inside Keystone Arena.
With the win, the Golden Bears end the regular season with a 12-6 overall record and a 6-1 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic conference (PSAC), notching a one-win improvement from last season in both categories. East Stroudsburg falls to 5-10 with a 1-6 conference record after tonight's defeat.
The Golden Bears won the first seven bouts of the match, eight in all, including five-straight bonus wins to secure the triumph.
Nicholas DeMarco and
Travis Roper earned Kutztown six points with decisions in the first two bouts. DeMarco executed a late takedown in the third period to garner a 5-1 win over Connor Maliff at 125 pounds. Following the bout, East Stroudsburg was deducted one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct. Roper and Marius Kola battled through two scoreless periods at 133 pounds, but Roper's escape at the onset of the third period gave him the 1-0 victory.
Kutztown followed up with five-straight bonus-point victories to put the visiting team away.
After a scoreless first period in the 141-pound bout,
Matt Benvenuto scored a takedown midway through the second period and turned Christian Silva for a pin at the 4:22 mark.
Jackson Stabile notched three takedowns in the 149-pound match, defeating Erik Januszkiewicz by a 9-1 major decision.
Matt Martoccio recorded his 21st victory this season at 157 pounds, pinning Eric Howey at the beginning of the second period.
Bo Candelaria has turned it up a notch in the past couple weeks, tallying his third-straight bonus win. Candelaria dominated Joseph Hoy in the 165-pound bout for 3:27 before earning a 16-0 technical fall.
Ryan Krecker performed takedown after takedown at 174 pounds to defeat Matt Wax by major decision, 17-7.
Brandan Clark earned KU its final win of the night at 197 pounds, toppling Dan Ingulli, 7-1.
East Stroudsburg got itself into the positives with a pin by Luke DeLuise at 184 pounds and a 16-9 decision from Tyson Searer at heavyweight to cap off the match.
The Golden Bears will now have a bit of time off to recuperate for the NCAA Super Region I Championships in West Liberty, W.Va. on Feb. 27-28. The top four finishers at each of the 10 weight classes will punch their tickets to St. Louis, Mo. for the NCAA National Championships on March 13-14.
