Connolly and Ridgeway Lead Golden Bears to Victory over Edinboro

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team continued its strong play on offense on Saturday afternoon as it took down Edinboro University, 92-82, on the road in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup inside McComb Fieldhouse.

Kutztown (3-0, 2-0 PSAC) has scored 90 or more points in three consecutive games to begin the season for the first time since the beginning of the 2009-10 season. The Golden Bears are averaging just over 105 points per game thus far, which ranks the team in the top-5 in scoring in all of Division II.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle, as the two teams stayed relatively close throughout the duration of the first 20 minutes of play. KU took a 40-39 lead into intermission behind strong play from Ryan Connolly (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area), who scored 11 of his 22 points in the opening half.

Kutztown used two 7-0 runs and a 6-0 spurt in the final 10 minutes of the game that proved to be the difference in the evenly-matched contest. KU finished the game on a 19-8 run to secure the victory over the Fighting Scots.

Connolly scored a career-high 22 points (6-9 FG, 5-8 3PT) and sophomore Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) provided a huge boost off the bench with a career-high 18 (5-10 FG, 4-5 3PT) in the win.

Connolly also tied his career-high with six field goals made and set a career-high with his five three-pointers. Ridgeway tied his career-highs in both field goals made (5) and field goals attempted (10), as well as setting a new personal-best mark in three-pointers with four.

Josh Johnson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown), Austin Beidelman (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) and Anthony Selby (Jersey City, N.J./Williamstown (Burlington County CC)), along with Connolly and Ridgeway, each scored in double-figures for KU. Johnson scored 15 points, Beidelman had 14 (4-7 FG, 6-7 FT) and Selby chipped in with 12 (5-6 FG). Those five players scored 81 of the 92 points in the game for the Golden Bears.

Johnson pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, which gave him his second double-double of the season. Beidelman set a career-high with four steals and Selby had a team-best two blocked shots.

Freshman Dan Cuevas (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) contributed off the bench with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field.

Kutztown shot 51 percent from the field, its third consecutive game over 50 percent. KU held a 12-8 advantage in assists over Edinboro and had 30 bench points compared to 13 for the Fighting Scots.

Edinboro (1-1, 1-1) was led by outstanding redshirt-sophomore Jaymon Mason (Preseason All-PSAC West), who scored a game-high 39 points. He was 11-of-22 from the field and 14-of-14 at the line. He also had nine rebounds and went 3-of-8 from behind the arc. Tommy Scales had 17 points and nine boards, while Henri Wade-Chatman contributed with 12 points on 7-of-9 from the field.

Kutztown stays out west for another PSAC game tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 22 at 3 p.m., at Mercyhurst. The Golden Bears will be looking for their first 4-0 start since the 2008-09 season.
