JOHNSTOWN, Pa. –
Travis Roper (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and
Matt Martoccio (Kintnersville, Pa./Council Rock South (Lock Haven)) each won matches for the Kutztown University wrestling team on Thursday evening, who dropped a 36-9 final to sixth-ranked Pitt-Johnstown at UPJ's Sports Center.
The Mountain Cats earned their first win over the Golden Bears in the last three years. KU fell behind 11-0 through the first two bouts before Roper pinned his opponent at 141 in 3:25 to cut the deficit to 11-6.
Martoccio, ranked fourth in Division II, earned a 3-2 win by decision at 157, but UPJ's trio of nationally-ranked wrestlers at the next three classes all won to stretch the lead for the home team. KU held three of the final four matches to narrow decisions.
Kutztown looks ahead to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship on Saturday, Dec. 5 at Mercyurst University in Erie, Pa.
