EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Three Kutztown University wrestlers placed in the top-six to lead the team at Sunday's 49th annual East Stroudsburg Open at ESU's Koehler Fieldhouse.
 
As it has in past years, Kutztown used the ESU Open as its first full-team competition of the season. In an effort to not tire out its wrestlers so early in the year, Golden Bears that advanced deep in the tournament were eventually pulled out to ensure for a healthy season.
 
Redshirt-senior Matt Martoccio (Kintnersville, Pa./Council Rock South (Lock Haven)) finished in fourth place with a 4-1 record. The returning All-American defeated wrestlers from Old Dominion, Navy, Army and Drexel as he opened Sunday with four straight wins. With six wins on the year, Martoccio moves into 10th all-time in school history with 67 career wins.
 
Ryan Krecker (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area (Campbell)) and Brandan Clark (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) each placed sixth in their respective classes. Krecker went 3-1 at 174, including a win by tech. fall, as Clark went 4-1 with two major decisions. Clark now has 51 career wins, 30th all-time in KU history.
 
Sophomore Travis Roper (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) is off to a 4-0 start to his 141-pound career, after wrestling at 133 last year. He posted a flawless 3-0 record Sunday before bowing out, that included two pins for 11 in his young career, 20th all-time at KU.
 
Sophomore Austin Petril (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby (Ursinus)) won a pair of matches in the consolation bracket to post a 3-2 record at 125. He won by way of two decisions and a technical fall.
 
David Migliaccio (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) went 2-2 at 149. He opened the day with a 3-2 win by decision and went on to win by pinfall in the consolation bracket in 2:29. Heavyweight Ryan Appleby (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere) also won two matches with a matching 2-2 record. He won his first two matches by decision over Division I opponents from Lock Haven and George Mason.
 
Zach Ulerick (Middletown, Pa./Middletown Area) (133) and Julio Arredondo (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) (174) also won matches for KU.
 
Kutztown enters a much-anticipated dual match against nationally-ranked Pitt-Johnstown on Friday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. at UPJ. KU has won the last two meetings over UPJ, the only wins over the Mountain Cats in school history.
