KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team played well in the opening set on Saturday, but fell in extras and was ultimately swept by first-place Pitt-Johnstown in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match at Keystone Arena.
Kutztown (4-15, 2-7 PSAC) led Pitt-Johnstown (15-2, 9-0) by a score of 16-13 in the first set. However, the Mountain Cats clawed back as the teams traded points down the stretch. The Golden Bears led 24-23 but Pitt-Johnstown scored the next three points to win the set.
In the second set, KU trailed 15-13 before the Mountain Cats finished on a 10-5 run to take the frame, 25-18. The Maroon and Gold struggled in the final set as Pitt-Johnstown carried its momentum from the first two sets and jumped out to a 15-2 lead. The Golden Bears finished out the set strong but fell 25-14.
Senior
Audrey Stringer (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and freshman
Shannon Restrepo (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) tied for a team-high eight kills each. Restrepo doubled-up with 12 digs and 10 assists while hitting .615. Stringer had a team-high four blocks and also collected three digs.
Freshman
Jessica Howe (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) recorded five kills and five digs, while
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) finished with 13 assists.
Tori Wakelee (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) collected four kills and nine digs, and
Niki Carpenter (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion Area) tallied four kills and two blocks.
The Golden Bears take a break from PSAC play with a non-conference matchup at Wilmington (Del.) on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. KU hosts a PSAC crossover next weekend and begins the tournament against Slippery Rock on Friday, Oct. 16 at 11:30 a.m. inside Keystone Arena.
