KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team travels to Western Pennsylvania this weekend to face Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponents Indiana University of Pennsylvania and California University of Pennsylvania.
The Golden Bears find themselves with a 3-3-1 record to start the season, including a 3-3 mark in PSAC play. Kutztown will try to bounce back from a tough 1-0 loss last Wednesday to the No. 4 team in the nation, Gannon University.
Kutztown trails both California (Pa.) and Indiana (Pa.) in the PSAC standings. California (Pa.) sits in fifth place with a 4-2-2 PSAC mark, while IUP is in sixth with a 4-2-1 record to begin the year. KU is 10th in the PSAC standings at 3-3, but within striking distance of both opponents.
KU split two games with California (Pa.) last year, and defeated Indiana (Pa.) in its lone matchup. Kutztown looks for revenge against the Vulcans following its season-ending loss against them in the 2014 NCAA Atlantic Regional playoffs.
Kutztown has goals from eight different players so far this season. Freshmen
Alyssa Ryan (North Wales, Pa./Wissahickon) and
Felicia Silveira (Hampton, N.J./Voorhees) lead the team with two goals each.
Brooke May (East Berlin, Pa./Dover Area) is tied for the PSAC lead with four assists and ranks in the top 25 in all of Division II. Her three-assist effort in a win over Lock Haven tied a school-record for assists in a game.
Goalkeepers
Deanna Messner (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and
Imani Taylor (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) have both had success in the early part of the season. Messner has started six games in goal for Kutztown, compiling 31 saves and an .838 save percentage, both top 10 marks in the PSAC. Taylor has one start and two appearances for Kutztown. She has seven saves and an .875 save percentage.
Kutztown will begin its weekend road trip at Indiana (Pa.) on Friday, Oct. 2 at 3 p.m. and round out the weekend at California (Pa.) on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 3 p.m.
