HTML Box Score BLOOMSBURG, Pa. –
Josh Johnson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) shot a perfect 9-for-9 from the field and scored 21 points for the second time in three games to lead the Kutztown University men's basketball team to an 89-85 road victory over Bloomsburg University on Saturday.
With Kutztown and East Stroudsburg's wins on Saturday, ESU remains a half-game up in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. The division's top two teams are set to meet at Kutztown's Keystone Arena next Saturday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m.
The Golden Bears (12-7, 9-4 PSAC) continued their latest trend of protecting the ball, shooting effectively from the field, and getting numerous players involved offensively to post their third straight game scoring at least 88 points.
Johnson led four double-digit scorers for KU with a game-high 21 points and six rebounds. What made Johnson's game that much more impressive was that he posted the strong offensive game despite battling foul trouble. He played just 15 minutes.
Both teams made more than half of their shot attempts for the game. KU led the way at 51.5 percent followed by Bloomsburg (7-9, 3-9) at 50.9 percent. Offensively, KU had lowered its turnover output in each of the last three games, and despite breaking that streak Saturday, Kutztown's mere 10 turnovers were good for a +5 advantage over the Huskies.
Five different players drained three-pointers in an effective 8-for-15 effort as a team. Freshman
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) was a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc as
Howard Sellars (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area (Saint Peter's)) also drained two.
Sellars finished with 16 points in 17 minutes.
Kutztown led by as many as 15 in the first half with a 13-point advantage at halftime at 42-29. The second half lead grew to as many as 21 with 13:16 to play, but the Huskies would not give up on their home floor.
Bloomsburg trimmed off 10 points over the next 11 minutes to trail by 11 with 1:57 to play off an and-1 layup by Alssene Saintillus. Still down by double-digits with under a minute to play, Bloomsburg's Jon Riles got hot with four three-pointers in the final 41 seconds. Riles hit back-to-back three-pointers around a missed 1-and-1 attempt by KU to cut its deficit to six with 28 seconds to play.
Kutztown cashed in all six of its free throw attempts in the final 19 seconds to avoid the late Bloomsburg comeback, but Bloomsburg answered each of Kutztown's trips to the line with a layup or a three-pointer by Riles. Bloomsburg scored 14 points in the 41 seconds to round out the final minute of Kutztown's four-point win.
Tynell Fortune (Blakeslee, Pa./Pocono Mountain West (California (PA))) scored 15 points and shot 6-for-7 at the free throw line, ending his streak of consecutive free throws made at 24. Fortune's 103 free throws lead the PSAC by more than 20, as his 86.6 shooting percentage ranks sixth in the conference. He also ranks sixth in scoring at 16.1 per game.
Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) scored 11 points and dished out a team-high six assists and four steals. He was one of five Golden Bears with four or more assists as
Austin Beidelman (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland), Ridgeway, Fortune and
Anthony Selby (Jersey City, N.J./Williamstown (Burlington County CC)) each had four.
For the season, Beidelman leads the PSAC with a 2.5 assist/turnover ratio, as Brooks ranks third at 2.4. Brooks did not register a block in the win, snapping his streak of nine straight games at least one rejection. KU only had one block as team, but remains the second-best shot-blocking team in the league at 4.74 per game.
Rell Sherman (Philadelphia, Pa./Olney West (Manor Junior College)) was aggressive on the glass in his extended action with four rebounds in 14 minutes.
Saintilus led the way for Bloomsburg with 20 points on 10-of-11 shooting at the free throw line. He notched a double-double with 11 rebounds. Riles' late flurry lifted him to 18 points.
The Golden Bears have a bye on Wednesday's conference date, and return to action for their battle for first place in the PSAC East against East Stroudsburg on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear white to the game in support of KU's 'White Out' campaign.
