Lock Haven Nets Game-Winner in Final Seconds of Overtime to Down Golden Bears

HTML Box Score

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Lock Haven University's Wali Hepburn made the game-winning jumper with 1.4 seconds remaining in overtime to upset the Kutztown University men's basketball team 100-98 on Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game at Keystone Arena.

The Golden Bears (10-7, 7-4 PSAC) had to overcome a double-digit deficit early in the second half, largely due to Lock Haven (4-10, 4-6) posting its best shooting night of the year (60 percent). Kutztown entered the game atop the PSAC East standings, and surely got Lock Haven's best on Saturday.

Trailing by two in overtime, Kutztown's Josh Johnson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) picked up a loose ball in the paint and laid it in to tie the game at 98-98 with 16 seconds left. Hepburn handled the following possession, drove to his right and put up a one-handed floater near the baseline that rimmed in with 1.4 seconds left to give Lock Haven a two-point lead. Kutztown's Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) launched a half-court shot at the buzzer that nearly went in, but it bounced off the backboard and off the rim for the Lock Haven win.

Hepburn hit a similar jump-shot with 25 seconds remaining in regulation that tied the game and ultimately sent the game into overtime.

Kutztown overcame some adversity by digging out of the double-digit deficit in the second half. Johnson and Brooks fueled an eight-point run midway through the half to give KU its first lead (62-60) since 2-0 with 10:47 to play.

Tied with 6:25 to play, Howard Sellars (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area (Saint Peter's)) got hot and went on a personal 8-1 run to give KU a five-point lead with 5:34 to play. Sellars scored a season-high 21 points with a 3-for-4 performance from three-point range and 4-of-5 at the free throw line.

Tynell Fortune (Blakeslee, Pa./Pocono Mountain West (California (PA))) stretched KU's lead to a game-high eight points with 4:01 to play with his perfect free throw performance. Fortune's 22-point night was highlighted by a 12-for-12 performance at the free throw line. It is the 10th time in program history a Golden Bear has posted a perfect game at the free throw line with at least 10 attempts.

Offensive rebounds and quality possessions down the stretch led Lock Haven to an 11-3 run, capped with a three-point dagger by Bootsie Walker to tie the game at 84-84 with 49 seconds left in regulation. Sellars was fouled on a three-point attempt with 36 seconds left, but made two of three to allow Lock Haven to draw up a two-point play, leading to Hepburn's jumper with 25 seconds left. Rell Sherman (Philadelphia, Pa./Olney West (Manor Junior College)) missed a last-second three-pointer to send Kutztown to its second overtime game of the year.

Johnson scored a season-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting and seven rebounds. He also had two steals and a block.

Kutztown posted three 20+ scorers for the first time since Jan. 6, 2012, when Nate Edwards (29), Micah Fraction (28) and Devon McBride (25) combined for 82 points at Edinboro University.

Freshman Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) stepped up as the starting point guard for the second straight game with Austin Beidelman (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) out with an injury. Ridgeway led the team in scoring at halftime (8) and used an 8-for-10 night at the free throw line to lead him to a season-high 14 points. He also dished out a season-high eight assists in 37 minutes.

Brooks rounded out the five double-digit scorers with 12 points, a game-high eight rebounds, four assists, including the 200th of his career, three blocks and two steals. Anthony Selby (Jersey City, N.J./Williamstown (Burlington County CC)) grabbed four steals with five rebounds.

As a team, KU shot 32-for-42 at the free throw line for 76.2 percent. It shot 47.6 percent from the field, but was out-rebounded by 11 at 40-29.

Hepburn led Lock Haven with 27 points on 11-for-20 shooting. Elijah Cooper scored 18 points, Theo West and Walker each scored 16 points, and Nate Walters finished with 11 for Lock Haven's five double-digit scorers.

The Golden Bears aim to get back in the win column on Wednesday, Jan. 14 against Shippensburg University at Keystone Arena. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
