KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Five different Golden Bears scored and 22 players saw the field as the Kutztown University field hockey team controlled its non-conference game on Friday afternoon against Newberry College with a 6-3 win at University Field.

Kutztown (2-1) got out to a fast start thanks to a goal in the fourth minute by junior captain Anna Behm (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) (assisted by Madison Wampler (York, Pa./West York Area)). It was clear from the very beginning that the intensity was extremely high for the Maroon and Gold.

"This was a total team effort today," head coach Marci Scheuing said. "We got out to a fast start, our second unit played the entire second half, and I think they did a great job of stepping in and creating chemistry right away. Especially coming off the Bloomsburg victory, we really wanted to win this one today. We came out a little flat in the beginning, but really picked it up as the game went on."

Not long after the Behm goal, Kutztown received some more offense from Madison Dworak, who had a nice backhanded goal 17 minutes in. Not long after, Newberry had a sign of life from its offense, when Kaycie Andrew netted a rebound off her stick in the 19th minute, bringing the score to 2-1.

The Golden Bears were not fazed by the goal as they extended their lead to 3-1 after Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) netted a shot in front of the cage in the 25th minute. The half was not over for them though, as Behm scored her fifth goal in three games in the 34th minute right in front of the cage.

"Our spacing and passing were two of our biggest keys in our win today," Behm said. "Our passing was phenomenal, especially in the second half. Our intensity picked up a lot in the second half, and that is something we have to continue to do throughout an entire game moving forward."

Two more goals would ensue in the second half for the Golden Bears; one coming from Madison Stewart (New Castle, Del./William Penn) in the 37th minute and another from Megan Tiwold (Northampton, Pa./Northampton), which came off a breakaway that she was taken out on by the goalie, but still managed to make an unbelievably athletic dive at the ball, causing it to roll subtly into net.

Newberry's offense scored twice in the final 10 minutes of the game, but it was too little too late as the game was out of reach for it to spark a comeback.

Both teams recorded 18 shots on the day. Newberry actually had more shots on target (13-12) but the Golden Bears were able to find the back of the net more than their worthy opponents. Three goalies participated for Kutztown, and they were all able to record a save. Chardonnay Hope (New Castle, Del./William Penn) played the bulk of the game (entire first half) and was extremely impressive in net, allowing only one goal and recording five saves. Kayla Denlinger (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) and Rachael Sanders (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg (Limestone)) also played in the cage for KU.

Kutztown will have its abilities put to the test when it faces the Millersville Marauders, the top-ranked team in Division II, on Saturday, Sept. 13 on Millersville's home turf beginning at 12 p.m.
