MANSFIELD, Pa. – For the second time this season, the Kutztown University baseball team split a doubleheader with Mansfield University. Kutztown won Wednesday's opener 8-5, but dropped the nightcap 11-4 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at Kelly Park in Downtown Mansfield.

Wednesday's games had been postponed multiple times this season due to weather and field conditions, but Wednesday provided an opportunity for the series to be completed at a local field in the town of Mansfield.

Carson Baker (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman (Lackawanna)) drove in four runs in the opener and five on the day for the Golden Bears (18-11, 6-8 PSAC East). It was highlighted by his three-run home run in the fifth inning that gave Kutztown a 7-0 lead over the Mountaineers (18-10, 6-7). It was his second home run of the season.

Kutztown commanded an 8-0 lead in game one after plating four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) hit a RBI single and scored on a Baker RBI in the first inning. A runner also scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead through one. Both Baker and Martinez had multi-hit games in the opener.

Baker's three-run bomb came with no outs following Martinez and Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) reaching on base hits. Clay Sebesky (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) drove in the final run of the inning on a ground ball for a 8-0 lead for KU.

Mansfield answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and one run in the sixth on a stolen base attempt, but that was as close as Mansfield could get to a comeback.

Starter Brandon Shimo (Jermyn, PA/Lakeland (Lackawanna)) moved to 4-0 with 4.1 innings on the mound. He struck out six batters and allowed just three hits with no walks. On the season, he has 28 strikeouts and three walks. He was charged with one run.

Extra-base hits led Mansfield to a dominant game two victory. It hit four doubles and a home run that accounted for six of the team's 11 runs.

Mansfield led 3-0 through two, but the Golden Bears responded with four runs in the third to take a 4-3 lead. Stoudt and Baker notched RBI hits, and freshman Brandon Cholish (Peckville, PA/Valley View (Lackawanna)) hit the go-ahead two-run double down the line.

The lead went back to Mansfield in the fourth inning for the final time. It opened the inning with a hit-by-pitch, a walk and an infield single to load the bases with no outs off KU starter Mike Kammerer (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic). A two-run double down the line by Seth Tressler and a bases loaded walk gave Mansfield a 6-4 lead and brought an end to Kammerer's day.

MU went on to score one in the fifth and four in the sixth to close the scoring in the nightcap.

The Golden Bears remain in PSAC play this weekend against Bloomsburg University. KU will play at Bloomsburg on Friday, April 11, and at home at North Campus Field on Saturday, April 12. Both doubleheaders are set to start at 1 p.m.
