Box Score 2 Shippensburg 10, Kutztown 1 (HTML Box Score) Shippensburg 3, Kutztown 0 (HTML Box Score) SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team struggled to get its offense going against a solid Shippensburg University squad in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon from Fairchild Field. Shippensburg took the opener 10-1 and the second game 3-0.
Kutztown's (21-6, 3-7 PSAC E) two costly losses drops it to sixth in the conference, while Shippensburg (21-6, 9-3 PSAC E) solidifies its place on top of the Eastern Division.
In the opening game, KU was held off the scoreboard until the sixth inning when right-fielder
Carson Baker (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman (Lackawanna)) hit an RBI double into left field to bring
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) home from third base. Baker has been solid thus far this season with runners in scoring position, ranking second on the team with 14 RBI.
The Golden Bear outfielders led the way for the offense. Along with Baker, left-fielder
Brady McNab (Hatboro, PA/Archbishop Wood (Frederick CC)) and center-fielder
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) all tallied two hits apiece for KU.
Joe Peters (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown (Delaware Technical CC)) snuck in a single as a pinch-hitter in the final inning.
Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) (1-1) gets his first loss on the mound this season, giving up four runs and four hits in 3.2 innings.
Eric Moul (Hanover, PA/South Western) and
Dave King (Tremont, PA/Minersville) each pitched an inning of relief for KU. Rich Michaud (1-0) earned his first win of the year in a complete-game on the mound for Shippensburg.
The Maroon and Gold contained Shippensburg's high-octane offense in the nightcap, but failed to plate a run. Baker remained consistent at the plate, recording two of the team's four hits in the game, including another double to left field. McNab nailed a single in the first inning and
Warren Stimpson (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) hit a single to second base as a pinch-hitter in the sixth.
Pat Flynn (Pottstown, PA/West-Mont Christian Academy) (0-1) earns his first loss on the season after pitching the first five innings, giving up five hits and recording three strikeouts.
Matt Matricardi (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) turned in a 1-2-3 inning in relief during the sixth. Swingman Pat Kregoloh struck out seven in a complete game for the Raiders.
Kregoloh also got in done on the offense, finishing the day with three hits and a home run in the nightcap. Cody Ezolt also recorded three hits throughout the day and Jake Kennedy tallied two in the opener.
The two squads will battle it out again tomorrow, April 6 in a doubleheader from KU's North Campus Field beginning at 1 p.m.
