Box Score 2 Kutztown 6, Lincoln 0 (HTML Box Score) Kutztown 2, Lincoln 1 (HTML Box Score) KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team allowed five hits and one run in a doubleheader sweep of Lincoln University (PA) on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference affair at North Campus Field. KU won by margins of 6-0 and 2-1.
Senior
Corey Snyder (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) moved to 4-0 on the mound with 5.0+ innings of two-hit ball in the opener. He threw 69 pitches and tallied four strikeouts with one walk and has not allowed an earned run in a career-high 17 innings this season.
Snyder left a scoreless game through the top of the fifth inning. Kutztown scored all six of its runs in the fifth and sixth innings, as Lions pitcher Doug Cook could not keep the Golden Bears (15-8) off the board any longer. He had a terrific outing through the first five innings, but with no relief pitchers ready on the bench, and Kutztown's top hitters coming to bat in the late innings, Cook's 113 pitches took their toll.
With two runners in scoring position,
Warren Stimpson (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) put Kutztown on the board with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. In the sixth, KU walked in three straight runners with no outs to take a 4-0 lead. A sacrifice fly by
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) and a single by
Brandon Cholish (Peckville, PA/Valley View (Lackawanna)) that scored
Travis Kreitz (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) on a throwing error on the Lincoln right fielder capped the scoring in the opener.
Freshman
Pat Flynn (Pottstown, PA/West-Mont Christian Academy) took over for Snyder following a leadoff walk in the sixth inning, when KU held a 1-0 lead. He picked up the six-out save with four ground balls and a strikeout combined with a caught stealing attempt at second base. It is Flynn's first save of the season.
Kutztown plated two runs in the first inning of the nightcap on what turned out to be the game-winning two-run double from Kreitz to the right field corner. It scored
Brandon Hickey (Mountville, PA/Hempfield) and
Joe Peters (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown (Delaware Technical CC)), who reached base by a single and a hit-by-pitch, respectively.
Five pitchers were used in the one-run win for KU.
Nick Fulop (Matawan, NJ/Matawan Regional) picked up the win by allowing one hit through the first two innings.
Matt Matricardi (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) and
Mike Kammerer (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) pitched hitless third and fourth innings, respectively, as Lincoln scored its only run of the game off pitcher
Eric Moul (Hanover, PA/South Western). Lincoln's Ronald Lashley hit an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a ground ball to bring the Lions within one.
Sophomore closer
Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) took over with one out in the sixth inning, when Lincoln put two runners on base. He got out of the jam with a pair of ground balls. Lincoln put the game-tying run on second in the seventh inning with two outs, but Swarmer's fourth ground ball out of the game sealed his team-leading fifth save of the season.
