Martinez Breaks 31-Year Stolen Base Record in Non-Conference Action

Box Score

Wilmington 15, Kutztown 4 (HTML Box Score)

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Junior Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) of the Kutztown University baseball team stole his 31st base of the season in the third inning of a 15-4 non-conference setback to Wilmington University on Thursday at North Campus Field, breaking the school-record for stolen bases in season.

Martinez broke Bill Sassaman's record from 1983 that stood for more than 30 years. This season, he is 31-for-32 in stolen base attempts to tie him for 15th in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) record books. The PSAC record is 45. He has stolen a base in 21 games this season, and has nine multi-steal games including a three-steal game against Bloomfield.

For his career, Martinez has swiped 53 bags to tie him for third in the career record books. He is one away from moving into a tie for second place, and is 36 away from Sassaman's career record of 89.

Wilmington took advantage of some clutch two-out hitting and some costly Kutztown errors to rise to a 11-0 lead in the third inning. Sam Goines hit a grand slam in the first inning with two outs for a 4-0 advantage, and KU committed four errors in the third inning that led to seven Wilmington runs – six of which were unearned.

Kutztown hit the scoreboard in the bottom half of the third inning with an unearned run against Wilmington pitcher Jamie Treml, who dazzled with 11 strikeouts while allowing two hits and no earned runs in six innings of work. Martinez beat out an infield single, as the throw went past the first baseman to score the runner from second base.

Eric Moul (Hanover, PA/South Western) came on in relief in the fourth inning and stopped the bleeding with two scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and had two strikeouts. Later in the game, Matt Matricardi (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) pitched the final two innings and did not allow an earned run to go along with three strikeouts.

Following a sacrifice fly for Wilmington in the seventh, Warren Stimpson (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) struck for one of his three hits with a two-run double that rolled to the fence to put the score at 12-3. His 3-for-4 outing marked his first three-hit game as a Golden Bear.

Clay Sebesky (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) also drove in a run in the eighth inning.

Overall, Wilmington pounded out 15 hits to Kutztown's seven.

The Golden Bears will look to rebound quickly as they return to PSAC action this weekend to take on East Stroudsburg beginning on Friday, April 25 at 1 p.m. at North Campus Field. KU will need to take at least three of four games over the Warriors this weekend to remain in playoff contention.
