Photo Gallery KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team totaled 16 runs on its way to a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East doubleheader sweep over Lock Haven University on a sunny Saturday afternoon at North Campus Fields to celebrate Senior Day. A big third inning led KU to a 5-1 win in the first game, and the Golden Bears piled it on late for an 11-2 victory in Game 2.
Kutztown (23-16, 11-13 PSAC E) honored
Ricky Devlin (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough),
John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)),
Brandon Shimo (Jermyn, PA/Lakeland (Lackawanna)),
Carson Baker (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman (Lackawanna)),
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights), and
Colin Holmes (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) as its six seniors during the pregame festivities. In the past two days, Kutztown has secured all four wins against a struggling Lock Haven (11-24, 3-19 PSAC E) squad.
A four-run third inning was the key to victory for Kutztown in the opener. With the bases loaded after the first three batters,
Brandon Cholish (Peckville, PA/Valley View (Lackawanna)) got things going with a RBI fielder's choice to bring
Thomas Romano (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) across the plate.
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) then hit a sacrifice fly to advance the runners and score another.
Joe Peters (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown (Delaware Technical CC)) brought in the third run with a single out to right field and the final run came off a fielding error at second base.
Martinez showed off his speed in the bottom of the fifth to net KU its final run of the game. After a single down the left field line, Martinez stole second, followed by a successful steal to third on the very next pitch. LHU walked Peters on the next at-bat, giving
Warren Stimpson (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) the opportunity to throw down a bunt and bring Martinez home.
Lock Haven scored its only run of the game off a solo home run blasted out to center field by Aaron Botts in the top of the seventh. KU held a 9-6 hit advantage in the opener and LHU committed the only error.
Holmes turned in an impressive one-run, six-hit, one-strikeout complete game performance on Senior Day to earn his third win this season and his third complete game. Joe Nestor pitched all six innings for the Bald Eagles with four earned runs, two walks, and four strikeouts.
The Kutztown offense was firing on all cylinders in the nightcap, producing 13 hits on its way to 11 runs. In the first, Martinez was able to put himself in scoring position yet again off a steal to second.
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) knocked one to the pitcher, who overthrew his man, giving Martinez the chance to round the bases.
In the third with
Derian Sarlat (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) and Dockins on first and second,
Brady McNab (Hatboro, PA/Archbishop Wood (Frederick CC)) threw down a bunt to the third baseman who overthrew his man at first, scoring Sarlat. Martinez and Cholish each put down RBI-sacrifice bunts to give KU a 4-1 lead.
After a fielder's choice score in the fourth, the Kutztown offense took it to LHU in the sixth. The Bald Eagles made a plethora of fielding and pitching alterations to stop the bleeding, but not before KU could plate six runs off of eight hits to close out the 11-2 victory.
Lock Haven scored on solo home runs in the top of the third and seventh by Ryan Henritzy and Anthony Kyne. All three runs scored by LHU today came in the form of solo-home runs.
Pat Flynn (Pottstown, PA/West-Mont Christian Academy) pitched six solid innings for KU, giving up three hits, one run, two walks, and striking out five.
Eric Moul (Hanover, PA/South Western) closed out the final inning. LHU featured five pitchers throughout, with starter Aaron Lidget receiving the loss.
Martinez had himself a day with four hits, three RBI, and four stolen bases. He brought his season stolen-base total to 30, tying the Kutztown single-season record set in 1983.
The PSAC single-season record is 45. Martinez has 52 in his career, fourth in KU history. Devlin totaled three hits on the day, while Cholish and Dockins each brought in multiple RBI. Serlat went 3-for-4 and Stoudt went 2-for-3 in Game 2.
For the four-game weekend series with the Bald Eagles, Martinez batted .700 in four starts with seven hits, three RBI, and a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen-base attempts. Serlat and Stoudt both hit over .500, and Cholish led the squad with six RBI.
After today's action, Kutztown jumps into a fifth-place tie with Shippensburg University in the PSAC East at 11-13. KU has four conference games left, all against East Stroudsburg University, who is in fourth place at 13-11. KU will need to win 3-of-4 against the Warriors to have a shot at placing in the top four and making the postseason. The Maroon and Gold will first have a single non-conference game against Chestnut Hill University this Tuesday, April 22 at 3 p.m. from North Campus Fields.
