The Golden Bears (19-16, 7-13 PSAC East) are running out of time to work their way back into the top four of the division. Currently in sixth place in the East, Kutztown was as close as close can get to taking the two games on Wednesday against the 29th-ranked Marauders (27-12, 14-6). KU is currently four games behind East Stroudsburg in fourth place; however, the two teams will meet in the final series of the regular season.
Freshman
Mike Kammerer (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) turned in his best outing of the season for the Golden Bears in game one. In five innings, he allowed six hits and one run while striking out three. He needed just 60 pitches to quickly work his way through the Marauder lineup, moving to 2-1 on the season.
Sophomore
Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) picked up a perfect two-inning save with a pair of 1-2-3 innings. He notched two strikeouts for his sixth save of the season.
Senior
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) was the offensive hero in the opener with two, two-out RBI singles. He went 2-for-3 at the plate and capped a two-run third inning that gave KU a 2-0 lead.
Brady McNab (Hatboro, PA/Archbishop Wood (Frederick CC)) also drove in a run in the inning.
Millersville answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, but that was all that the KU pitching staff would allow. Stoudt closed the scoring in the opener with an insurance run with two outs in the top of the seventh inning with another RBI single.
Junior
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) remained hot with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate and on the base paths. He reached base three times, including a sacrifice bunt, scored two runs and swiped two bags for the third consecutive game. Including one steal in game two, he has now stole 25 bases this season for fourth in school history in a single-season, two behind third place and five off of the school record. The PSAC single-season record is 45. Martinez has 47 in his career, tied for fifth in KU history.
Millersville won the nightcap with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tied at 2-2 heading into the final inning, Millersville brought in relief pitcher Adam Zipko, who struck out the side to give Millersville some momentum. It led off the bottom half with a single up the middle, followed with a hump-back single, and won the game with a ground ball that made it through the infield due to a fielding shift that had the KU third baseman charging home expecting a bunt. The shortstop went to cover third on the wheel play, but Millersville's Dan Johnson tallied his third hit of the game with a groundball in the opened hole at shortstop to win 3-2.
Kutztown had just two hits in the nightcap and left nine runners on base including bases loaded situations in the first and second innings. Martinez stole a base for the fourth straight game, snapping his streak of three consecutive games with multiple stolen bases.
Millersville's top four hitters accounted for 11 of its 12 hits in the win. They went 11-for-16 at the plate. KU starter
Ryan Clow (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) pitched three innings in the no decision, as typical starter
Colin Holmes (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) suffered the loss with 1.2 innings pitched in relief. Notably, he threw just 31 pitches.
The Golden Bears head into this weekend's doubleheader against Lock Haven University with a must-win mentality. They sit in sixth place in the PSAC East with just two four-game sets remaining. KU travels to Lock Haven on Friday, April 18 for a pair of games set to start at 1 p.m.
