BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – In a high-scoring afternoon, the Kutztown University baseball team dropped its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader to Bloomsburg University on Sunday by scores of 7-6 and 11-7.

Bloomsburg (21-13, 13-5 PSAC East) has knotted up a first-place tie with Millersville in the Eastern Division. Kutztown (18-15, 6-12 PSAC East) falls to sixth place with Millersville up next.

Following a pair of one-run wins yesterday at North Campus Field, Bloomsburg took KU 4-0 in this season's four-game PSAC series.

In the opener, KU got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first. Brady Mcnab RBI singled to left field to bring Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) across the plate, and Brandon Hickey (Mountville, PA/Hempfield) doubled to score McNab.

The Huskies responded with seven runs throughout the next three innings to hold a 7-2 lead heading into the sixth.

KU operated efficiently in the sixth to mount the comeback attempt. With the bases loaded, Joe Peters (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown (Delaware Technical CC)) RBI singled to score Brandon Cholish (Peckville, PA/Valley View (Lackawanna)). Martinez then brought two runs across with a double out to left center. Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) capped the inning with a sacrifice grounder to plate Peters for KU's sixth run.

Down 7-6 with two outs and a man on first in the top of the seventh, KU was robbed by a sprawled-out catch in the outfield by BU's Brady West to end the game.

Brandon Shimo (Jermyn, PA/Lakeland (Lackawanna)) received his first loss this season on the mound after giving up nine hits and seven runs in just over three innings. Ryan Clow (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) pitched 1.1 innings of relief with three strikeouts.

The Golden Bears found themselves down major early in the nightcap after giving up 10 runs in the first two innings. Kutztown scored two runs in both the third and the fourth to give itself a fighting chance, trailing 10-6 with three innings remaining.

In the top of the sixth, Martinez advanced to third after two successful stolen bases. Carson Baker (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman (Lackawanna)) smacked a double out to right center to plate Martinez and cut the score to 11-7. KU went down 1-2-3 in the seventh to end the game in favor of the Huskies.

Pitcher Paul Piromalli (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West (Mercer County CC)) is also given his first loss this season after giving up seven runs in the first inning, but did record KU's only two strikeouts on the game.

Martinez led the offense with an impressive three doubles off four hits with two RBI and three runs scored throughout the day. Baker and Hickey also recorded extra-base hits. Third-basemen Eirc Frain had a big day for the Huskies, tallying four hits and four RBI.

Throughout the four-game series, Martinez, Stoudt, and Cholish all secured a team-leading five hits. Stoudt hit .455 with 11 at-bats, while Baker led the squad with three RBI.

The Maroon and Gold head to Millersville University this Tuesday, April 15 for a 1 p.m. PSAC East doubleheader.
