KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University baseball pitchers Colin Holmes (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) and Pat Flynn (Pottstown, PA/West-Mont Christian Academy) turned in terrific starts in Saturday's doubleheader against Bloomsburg University. They combined to throw a complete game and flirt with a perfect game, but were outdone by the Huskies in 1-0 and 2-1 losses in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action at North Campus Field.

In game one, Holmes led the Golden Bears (18-13, 6-10 PSAC East) and threw all seven innings. He allowed five hits with three strikeouts and worked quickly with 85 pitches and just one walk. His only run allowed was in the fourth inning as the Huskies (19-13, 11-5) took advantage of a called balk.

Following a great play by KU shortstop John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)) to get the lead runner out at third base on a ground ball, Holmes was left with two outs and the runner on first. He attempted to pickoff the runner, but was called for a balk to advance the runner to second. The next batter drove in the lone run of the game with a RBI single to left field.

Kutztown did not help itself by leaving runners in scoring position in three consecutive innings and four overall in the opener. With KU down to its final out with nobody on base, Thomas Romano (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) and Joe Peters (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown (Delaware Technical CC)) singled to put runners on the corners and the game-tying run 90 feet away. Travis Kreitz (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) stepped up to the plate in a pinch-hit situation and hit a long fly ball to left field, but was hauled in to end the game.

Bloomsburg starter Casey Cooperman shut down the Golden Bears for the second time this season. He threw a six-hit shutout, which was his second complete game win of the season over Kutztown. He also pitched against KU in the season-opening Builder Invitational.

The strong pitching continued into the nightcap as Kutztown's freshman dazzled in his second start of the season. Flynn held a perfect game intact for 5.2 innings with five strikeouts. Once his perfect game and no-hit bid came to an end with a walk and single with two outs in the sixth inning, it all seemed to come apart for Kutztown.

Bloomsburg went on a 3-for-3 stretch with two outs as the walk and three straight singles gave it a 2-0 lead. Kutztown cut the deficit to one in the bottom half of the inning with a Carson Baker (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman (Lackawanna)) sacrifice fly with runners on second and third and one out.

Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) took over for Flynn on the mound with one out in the seventh inning, and worked his way out of a jam that had a runner on second base. Like the first game, Kutztown placed runners on the corners with two outs and the game-tying run 90 feet away, but a long foul ball down the left field line was caught and completed the Saturday sweep for the Huskies.

Flynn only allowed the three sixth-inning hits in his second start of the season. He threw 70 pitches through 6.1 innings. Bloomsburg starter Tyler Hill allowed five hits in 6.1 innings with eight strikeouts and two walks. Cody Heane picked up the save.

Kutztown and Bloomsburg wrap up their season series on Sunday, April 13 at Bloomsburg beginning at 1 p.m.
