Women's Tennis Clinches Playoffs with Win over East Stroudsburg

Kutztown 5, East Stroudsburg 4 (HTML Box Score)

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – In a 'win or go home' atmosphere, the Kutztown University women's tennis team prevailed on Thursday afternoon with a 5-4 victory over East Stroudsburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match at the Keystone Courts.

With the win, the Golden Bears (9-6, 4-2 PSAC East) sealed their fate and will play in next week's PSAC Quarterfinals on Monday, April 14 at West Chester University. Match time is set for 3 p.m.

Kutztown's doubles matches played significant roles in the team-win over the Warriors (7-6, 2-4). KU won two of the three matches to carry some momentum into the singles matches. Hannah Pipkin (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) and Tori Zander (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) set the tone with a 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

Cynthia Good (Montrose, Pa./Elk Lake) and Erika Diffendall (Mountville, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) trailed 4-1 at No. 3 doubles and needed to pick up the pace quickly to avoid the loss. The duo scored seven of the next eight points to pull off the come-from-behind 8-5 win.

In singles play, Pipkin remained sharp with matching 6-0 wins at the top flight. Zander went up against Allison Bean at No. 2 singles and picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win. Kutztown's fifth victory was by Chelsea Davis (Spring City, Pa./Spring-Ford). She won the first set 6-3 and was winning the second 5-1 before a retirement ended the match.

Kutztown qualified for the postseason for the third consecutive year on Thursday, and will look to stay sharp with some non-conference matches this weekend at the Bloomsburg Duals. On Saturday, April 12, KU will take on Charleston at 11 a.m. and Bluefield State at 5 p.m.
