KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Junior Brandon Hickey (Mountville, PA/Hempfield) hit a pinch-hit, game-winning RBI single to lift the Kutztown University baseball team to a 3-2 game-one victory over Millersville University on Tuesday afternoon at North Campus Field. KU dropped the second Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game, 7-2.

Tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Kutztown's Brady McNab (Hatboro, PA/Archbishop Wood (Frederick CC)) led off the inning with a single up the middle. Following a pair of strikeouts, pinch-runner Warren Stimpson (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) advanced to second on a wild pitch to put a runner in scoring position. Hickey stepped into the box for the first time of the day in a pinch-hit situation, and hit a single the other way to left field to score Stimpson from second base and give the Golden Bears a 3-2 lead.

Golden Bear senior Brandon Shimo (Jermyn, PA/Lakeland (Lackawanna)) took it from there and pitched a complete game with three strikeouts. He allowed five hits while not surrendering a walk to push his season record to 3-0. Shimo holds a 22/3 strikeout/walk ratio this year.

McNab and John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)) each had multi-hit games for the Golden Bears (12-7, 2-4 PSAC East). McNab also drove in a run in KU's two-run first inning to score Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn).

Ted Barton pitched six innings for the Marauders (19-8, 6-2) and allowed three runs, two of which were earned.  Millersville received its offensive output from Dan Neff, who knocked home the only two runs for the Marauders with a two-run double in the second.

Things did not end up similarly for the Golden Bears in the second game, as they fell short to the Marauders by a score of 7-2. Colin Holmes (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) received the start for Kutztown and gave up five runs in four innings. He struck out six batters, marking his third game of the season with five or more punch-outs.

The offense was rolling for Millersville, especially for designated hitter Dan Johnson, who ended the game with three hits and four RBI. Tyler Orris and Kurt Seiders also drove in runs.

Derian Sarlat (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) had a bright spot for KU with his two-run single to right-center that gave Kutztown a 2-1 lead in the second inning. Millersville responded with the tying run in the third, three runs in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead, and two runs in the seventh to cap Tuesday's scoring.

Millersville received a gem from its game-two pitcher, Jim McDade, who went six innings with a pair of strikeouts. He held KU to three hits in the nightcap. Adam Zipko pitched a hitless seventh for MU.

Kutztown's Paul Piromalli (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West (Mercer County CC)) and Mike Kammerer (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) each pitched scoreless innings of relief.

The Golden Bears keep their busy week rolling with a doubleheader against Mansfield University tomorrow, Wednesday, April 2 at 1 p.m. Originally scheduled to be played on the road, poor field conditions at Mansfield has forced the games to be played at Kutztown's North Campus Field. The teams will swap home games, as KU will travel north to Mansfield on Monday, April 7 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
