WEST CHESTER, Pa. – For the second consecutive day, the Kutztown University baseball team took on West Chester University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader. With Sunday's matchup at West Chester's Serpico Field, the home team came out on top 5-3 and 8-4.

In a four game series this weekend, Kutztown (10-6, 1-3 PSAC) picked up one win from a 9-0 rout in the opening game. The West Chester Golden Rams (10-4, 3-1 PSAC) were triumphant in the final three.

West Chester's strong opening inning set the tone in the first matchup. After pitcher Joe Gutowski retired the top of the first in three batters, the Golden Rams offense plated four runs in the bottom of the first.

The top of the Kutztown lineup gave its best effort to mount a comeback, starting in the top of the third. With KU's top three loading the bases, cleanup Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) reached on a fielding error, sending lead-off man John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)) across the plate. Faced with the same situation in the top of the fifth, Stoudt sent Dockins home again and KU continued the offensive pressure. With a man on first and third and one out, Carson Baker (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman (Lackawanna)) drove one out to center field to bring Brandon Cholish (Peckville, PA/Valley View (Lackawanna)) home and narrow the deficit to 4-3. The Golden Rams turned a double play on the next at-bat to retire the side.

In the bottom of the sixth, West Chester capitalized with a man on second when Mike Raimo singled out to right field to bring in the fifth and final score.

Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) led the way with two hits and Dockins added a hit to his two runs-scored. Stoudt finished with two RBI and a hit, while Baker had a hit and an RBI. Right-fielder Travis Kreitz (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) added a double in three at-bats. West Chester featured five players with one hit, five with a run scored, and four with an RBI.

Stoudt only faced the first three batters of the game pitching on the mound before subbing out with an injury, but is credited with the loss. Gutowski earned the win for WCU.

Kutztown put together an errorless game compared to West Chester's five.

In the nightcap, Kutztown suffered an 8-4 setback despite outhitting its opponent. The scoring took off in a jam-packed third inning. Dockins led off the top of the inning with a double out to center field. Dockins advanced to third on a Cholish sacrifice bunt, and reached home on a balk by the pitcher. Martinez singled up the middle and stole second to put himself in position for Baker to bring him across the plate with a shot out to right field. The Golden Rams countered in the bottom of the inning with three runs by taking advantage of KU fielding errors to earn it first lead of the game.

The Maroon and Gold put up two more runs in the fifth, just to be countered by another three from WCU. With a man on first and third, Baker switched the field with a single out to left, recording his second consecutive RBI. Baker and Stoudt advanced on a passed ball, giving Thomas Romano (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) the opportunity to plate Stoudt with an RBI single. WCU fired off four hits and three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.

Kutztown couldn't get anything going in the final two innings and gave up two runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out the nightcap.

Errors proved costly in this one as WCU scored on three of KU's four errors. Kutztown did hold an 11-9 hit advantage.

Dockins led a quartet of multiple-hit Golden Bears with three hits and two runs. Baker, Martinez and Warren Stimpson (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) each finished with two hits and Baker knocked in two RBI.

James Rossi (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) is credited the loss after the first four innings on the mound. The sophomore struck out one with seven hits and three earned runs. Matt Matricardi (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) recorded a strike out in the final inning. Ron Scull earned the win for WCU and Kyle Weary closed out for the save.

For the four-game series, Dockins led the offense with an impressive nine hits on 16 at-bat (.563), seven runs scored, and two doubles. Stoudt led the squad with six RBI and recorded the only triple. Baker knocked in four RBI with five hits and Stimpson recorded two hits for a .750 slugging percentage.

Kutztown saw much more success on the mound during the opening games at Keystone Field. Brandon Shimo (Jermyn, PA/Lakeland (Lackawanna)) struck out nine and gave up a lone hit in the Golden Bears 9-0 win. Colin Holmes (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) struck out seven in the second game, but gave up five earned runs.

KU will return home this week for a double-header against Bloomfield College. The games are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m. from Keystone Field on Thursday, March 27.
