KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Senior pitcher
Brandon Shimo (Jermyn, PA/Lakeland (Lackawanna)) opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Saturday by allowing one hit over six innings in the Kutztown University baseball team's 9-0 win against West Chester University in the first game of a doubleheader at North Campus Field. KU dropped the nightcap, 6-4.
Shimo held the no-hitter intact for the first 5.1 innings in the opener. A single with one out in the sixth broke up the no-no, but was the only hit Shimo allowed on the day. He used a bevy of pitches to strike out a career-high nine batters, outdoing his previous-best of seven from his season-opener against Lock Haven. He was given plenty of run support from the third inning on in his second win of the season.
Offensively, each of Kutztown's top three hitters in the lineup had multi-hit games, and its top four hitters accounted for five RBI. KU broke for four runs in the third inning after a quick first two innings. With two runners on, freshman
Brandon Cholish (Peckville, PA/Valley View (Lackawanna)) hit a RBI single through the left side, one of his two hits of the game.
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) loaded the bases with an infield single, as a balk on the West Chester pitcher plated Kutztown's second run. Senior
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) capped the inning and cleared the remaining two Golden Bears on base with a triple to left center field. Stoudt finished with a game-high three RBI after walking in a run in the sixth.
A double steal attempt scored Kutztown's fifth run in the bottom of the fourth, but Kutztown wanted more than its 5-0 lead over the Golden Rams. It plated four runs in the sixth inning as Cholish and
Travis Kreitz (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) each drove in runs. Stoudt and
Warren Stimpson (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) each walked in a run as well.
West Chester's Fred Breidenbach was tabbed with the loss with four earned runs in four innings. He allowed six of Kutztown's nine hits and struck out four batters.
The nightcap provided much more parity between the two rivals. Kutztown led 4-2 through five innings, but West Chester scored four runs in the sixth inning on its way to a 6-4 victory.
With two runners on and one out, West Chester hit a RBI single to left field to cut the deficit to 4-3, forcing a KU pitching change. Sophomore
Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) came in and struck out the next batter, but allowed the game-tying single through the left side and a two-run double to left field as Kutztown trailed for the first time of the day at 6-4.
KU put two runners on base with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but was unable to draw any closer than the two-run deficit.
John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)), Stoudt and
Thomas Romano (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) had multi-hit games in the nightcap, led by Dockins' three-hit game from the leadoff position in the lineup. Martinez improved his team-leading stolen base count to 11, good for fifth in the PSAC.
The Golden Bears wrap up their series against the Golden Rams on Sunday, March 23 at West Chester beginning at 2 p.m.
