Jim Clements Named Head Football Coach at Kutztown University

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University announced the hiring of Jim Clements as the new head football coach, effective Monday morning, March 24. Clements comes to Kutztown after serving as the head coach at Delaware Valley College for eight years.

"I am very excited to take on this new challenge, and I am honored to be the next head football coach at Kutztown University," Clements said. "The last 10 years at Delaware Valley have been great for me, and I am really looking forward to the next chapter of my life. I plan to hit the ground running by meeting the players, staff, and student body. I am fortunate to have this great opportunity and am extremely excited to get started."

"Following a national search which included more than 100 applicants, we are very happy to welcome Jim Clements to the KU family," KU Director of Athletics Greg Bamberger said. "Jim comes very highly recommended and his level of success at Delaware Valley College was outstanding. He has a strong record of running disciplined programs and has a lot of experience with supplemental programs to help develop the well-rounded student-athlete. I know he is excited to get started with spring practice and beginning to establish the foundation of his program.

"One of the things that attracted us to Jim was his association with legendary football coaches like Bill Manlove.  He has been fortunate to have been associated with some great coaches."

Clements will be the 16th head coach in Kutztown's modern football history. He is the winningest coach in Delaware Valley history with an overall record of 66-24 from 2006-13. He held a .500 or better record in each of his eight years and won four Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) championships (2008-11) with three NCAA second round appearances (2009-11).

He was a three-time MAC Coach of the Year (2009-11) and capped his run with an undefeated season in 2011. He was named the 2010 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Region 2 Coach of the Year and the 2011 Maxwell Club Tri-State Coach of the Year, when his team went undefeated.

In the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), Delaware Valley won two South Atlantic Bowl titles (2008 & 2012) and finished as runner-up in 2006.

Clements was promoted to head coach prior to the 2006 season after serving as the team's assistant head coach/defensive coordinator for two years. He still held the defensive coordinator duties through the 2013 season.

He had success from his first year with the Aggies, when they went 8-3 and reached the postseason for the fourth consecutive year. His 2009 team set a school record for points in a 66-7 rout of Susquehanna in the opening round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

In 2011, Clements led Delaware Valley to a perfect 10-0 regular season and a fourth straight MAC title. The Aggies were a top seed in one of the NCAA playoff brackets and opened with a resounding 62-10 win over Norwich before falling in the second round.

The Aggies went 7-4 in 2013 and hosted the ECAC Southeast Bowl.

Clements' arrival at Delaware Valley in 2004 as assistant head coach/defensive coordinator was one of the key reasons why the team posted back-to-back 12-1 records. The Aggies captured the MAC championship and advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals each season.

He played at Widener University and anchored the defensive line as the Pioneers won the conference crown and reached the 1994 South Region final of the NCAA Division III playoffs. Clements was a three-year starter and recorded 154 tackles in his career.

Clements then served as a student-assistant in 1995 as Widener successfully defended its conference title and reached the NCAA playoffs. Clements returned to his alma mater two years later as a graduate assistant coach and was elevated to a full-time position in 1998. During that tenure, he coached the defensive line as well as the linebackers and special teams before eventually becoming the defensive coordinator in 2003.

Clements received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history with a certification in secondary education from Widener in 1996, and earned a master's in secondary education in 2001.

The Golden Bears finished with a 4-7 record in 2013 under Drew Folmar, who resigned in January to become the offensive coordinator at Lehigh University, and ended their season on a three-game winning streak while winning four of their final five games. Kutztown had four players earn all-conference status, and returns a strong class for the 2014 season, the 99th season of Kutztown football.

Spring practice is slated to start next week, and your first opportunity to see Coach Clements lead the Golden Bears onto the field will be on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Slippery Rock University for a 6 p.m. kickoff. Clements' first game at University Field will be on Saturday, Sept. 13 against Indiana University (PA) beginning at 1:05 p.m.
