ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The well-known saying of every point counts paid dividends for the 11th-ranked Kutztown University women's bowling team on Sunday. Kutztown finished in fourth place by one pin in the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Sectionals to qualify for the USBC Nationals in Reno, Nev. in April.
The Golden Bears finished with a total pinfall of 12,381, just one more than Davenport (12,380) to cap its comeback throughout the 64 baker-game tournament. This is the fourth straight year that Kutztown finished in the top of sectionals and qualified for the USBC National Tournament.
"We just never gave up, and the way this all ended nearly has me speechless," head coach
Joseph Ambrose said. "For our seniors to do this four years in a row is quite an achievement, and I am very proud of our team."
Seniors
Brooke Bower (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) and
Deanna DiRado (Greensburg, PA/Greensburg Salem) had terrific tournaments for the Golden Bears. Bower filled 87 percent of her frames and DiRado averaged more than 22 pins per frame. DiRado's 64.0 strike percentage is the highest ever for a KU player for an entire event.
KU started the day in sixth place and 54 pins behind Wright State in fourth place. It dropped down to seventh through the first eight games on Sunday and time was starting to tick on when Kutztown needed to make its push forward. Over the next four games, KU bowled three games over a 190 and moved from seventh to fifth place in the standings, 95 pins out of fourth with 20 games to go.
Notably, Kutztown's third block of games (33-48) was its highest of the weekend with 3,219 total pins.
Midway through the day, Kutztown narrowed the gap to 62 pins, but dropped slightly to a 76-pin deficit with eight games to go. Over the next four (games 57-60), KU bowled over 180 in all four including a 228 to draw within 18 pins of fourth place entering the final four games.
In the second to last game of the sectional, Kutztown bowled its highest game of the weekend with a 259. It closed the sectional with a 178 in game 64 to bring its total to 12,381.
Also qualifying for nationals was Webber International, Sacred Heart, and Maryland Eastern Shore.
