HAMPTON, Va. – The Kutztown University baseball team dominated on both sides of the ball in its 11-1 win over Briarcliffe (NY) to start its Saturday, but saw Bloomsburg University score nine runs in the final three innings in a 9-1 setback for the Golden Bears on the third day of the Builder Invitational.
KU vs. Briarcliffe (NY)
Corey Snyder (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) pitched five shutout innings in his first start of the season. He allowed two hits with four strikeouts.
Matt Matricardi (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for KU.
An infield error on Briarcliffe led to two Kutztown runs in the third inning. With two outs and a man on third, the second baseman committed an error to score
Brandon Cholish (Peckville, PA/Valley View (Lackawanna)). Following a dropped fly ball the following at-bat,
Brandon Hickey (Mountville, PA/Hempfield) legged out an infield single to score
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights), who reached on the initial infield error.
Joe Peters (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown (Delaware Technical CC)) extended the lead with RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings, Hickey drove in his second run of the day in the sixth, as unearned runs allowed Kutztown to build its lead to 8-0 through six.
Warren Stimpson (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) also drove in a run in Kutztown's five-run sixth inning.
Brady McNab (Hatboro, PA/Archbishop Wood (Frederick CC)) hit an RBI double in the seventh, and
Drew DeShong (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle Antrim (Hagerstown CC)) singled through the left side in the eighth as part of a two-run eighth inning as Kutztown commanded a 11-0 lead. Briarcliffe got on the board in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of hits.
KU vs. Bloomsburg
In the nightcap against Bloomsburg, Kutztown led 1-0 after four innings, but Bloomsburg scored all nine of its runs in the final three innings in Kutztown's first loss of the season. Notably, Bloomsburg scored all of its runs on walks, singles, and off KU errors.
On the mound,
James Rossi (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) pitched five innings for Kutztown and allowed no runs and three hits with four strikeouts.
Rossi handed over the ball in the sixth, and it went downhill from there for Kutztown as all three relievers let up multiple runs in the final innings. At the plate, Stoudt improved on his season average with a 4-for-4 performance.
For Bloomsburg, Casey Cooperman pitched a complete game and allowed seven hits and no earned runs with nine strikeouts and one walk.
The Golden Bears close out the tournament on Sunday, Feb. 23, against Lock Haven University beginning at 3 p.m. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
