HAMPTON, Va. – Each member of the Kutztown University baseball team's starting lineup had a hit, and six different players drove in runs as Kutztown survived a rain delay that elevated the final game time to more than six hours in a 10-2 victory over the Newport News Apprentice School on Friday afternoon.
Five Golden Bears notched multi-hit games as the team pounded out 15. Leadoff hitter
John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)) was 2-for-5,
Brandon Cholish (Peckville, PA/Valley View (Lackawanna)) was one of two players to drive in multiple runs (
Carson Baker (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman (Lackawanna))), as
Drew DeShong (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle Antrim (Hagerstown CC)),
Thomas Romano (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville), and
Derian Sarlat (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) rounded out the quintet of multi-hit players for KU.
On the mound,
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) pitched the opening 3.1 innings before the rain delay. He let up four hits and a solo home run.
Dave King (Tremont, PA/Minersville) relieved Stoudt with 2.2 innings of scoreless work on the mound and a pair of strikeouts.
Pat Flynn (Pottstown, PA/West-Mont Christian Academy) and
Nick Fulop (Matawan, NJ/Matawan Regional) also pitched an inning of scoreless relief.
Romano got things going for Kutztown (2-0) in the second inning, launching a double down the left-field line and advancing a walked DeShong to third.
Dariel Richardson (Reading, PA/Reading) then brought DeShong across the plate with an infield single, advancing Romano to third. Richardson took off for second base, forcing a throwing error and allowing Romano to steal home to close out the inning with a 2-0 lead.
Newport News Apprentice School (4-2) cut the deficit to one off a solo home run to left-center by Lee Rossi. The Golden Bears retaliated in the top of the third, taking a 3-1 lead off of two singles by Dockins and catcher
Joe Peters (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown (Delaware Technical CC)).
After a bit of a rain delay, the Maroon and Gold increased its lead in the top of the fifth. Baker's single up the middle brought in Cholish and
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) to take a 5-1 lead.
Cholish, Martinez, and Dockins all notched RBI down the stretch as Kutztown led 10-1 in the seventh.
Starter Kelmin Escalera suffered the loss for the Builders. He pitched the first four innings and let up three runs off six hits.
The Golden Bears are slated to play two games on Saturday, Feb. 22 beginning at 9 a.m. against Briarcliffe. They will also play Bloomsburg at 6 p.m. before wrapping up the invitational on Sunday against an opponent to be determined based on seeding.
