KUTZTOWN, Pa. – For the final home match of the season, the ninth-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team will take on Shippensburg University at Keystone Arena on Monday night, Feb. 17, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup. The match is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will honor the four seniors on the KU squad beforehand.
Kutztown (10-4, 4-1 PSAC) is currently on a three-match winning streak and has dominated its opponents of late. Shippensburg (8-13, 2-4 PSAC) on the other hand, is riding a seven-match losing skid, and will need to bring its top talent to take down the ninth-ranked team in the country for Division II.
KU will honor its four seniors on Friday night;
Nick Lamoreaux (Bethesda, MD/Milton Hershey),
Giovanni Ortiz (Reading, PA/Reading),
Mitch Voelker (Shoemakersville, PA/Schuylkill Valley), and
Evan Yenolevich (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh (Edinboro)).
All four Golden Bears have played an integral part in it's the team success so far this season. Lamoreaux has compiled 5 wins at 125 pounds, Ortiz has 16 wins at 184, Voelker has split time between 141 and 149, racking up 15 wins, and Yenolevich has eight wins at 133 with only one loss.
Earlier this season, Ortiz took fifth place overall at the PSAC Championships. Yenolevich has missed substantial time dues to injuries, but remained nationally-ranked at 133 pounds for the majority of the season.
KU's other nationally-ranked grappler,
Ziad Haddad (Orefield, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (North Carolina)), leads the squad with a perfect 16-0 record and has yet to surrender a takedown to an opponent this season. 10 of his 16 wins have come in dual meets, as he has also tallied four falls, three major decisions, and two technical falls.
Brandan Clark (Audubon, Pa./Methacton),
Matt Martoccio (Kintnersville, Pa./Council Rock South), and
Bo Candelaria (Reading, Pa./Middletown) figure to be in the starting lineup on Friday night, and all three are part of the 10-plus win club this season. Clark leads the team with 17 victories in 2013-14.
Kutztown will have one final PSAC dual on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at East Stroudsburg University before taking part in the NCAA Super Region I Championships in Johnstown on Mar. 1-2.
