ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The nationally-ranked Kutztown University women's bowling team was one of many KU teams to return to campus on Monday, but was the lone team to compete. KU opened the second half of its season at the Lehigh Valley Classic at Jordan Lanes in nearby Allentown and stands in sixth place midway through the two-day tournament.
The Lehigh Valley Classic is a United States Bowling Congress (USBC) sponsored event, so KU's win-loss record will not be affected due to non-NCAA competition.
The Golden Bears sit in sixth place after day one with a total pinfall of 4410. They opened with their best team score of the day with a 938 in the opening match.
Kayla Maselkevich (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) led the way with a 222, the highest score for any Golden Bear on Monday.
Maselkevich and
Lauren Stamm (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) threw all five games for Kutztown's 'varsity team'. Stamm posted one 200+ score, and
Taylor Strothmann (Maywood, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) posted two scores higher than a 190.
Kutztown also fielded a second team that competed outside of the overall standings. Its pinfall of 4131 would have ranked 15th.
Becca Heltzel (York, Pa./West York Area) led the 'junior varsity team' with a five-game total of 862.
Nichole Mann (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) posted an 851 and
Rikki Cohen (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) finished at 835.
Action continues tomorrow, Tuesday, Dec. 30 beginning at 9:30 a.m.
