Play-by-Play LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team trailed by four points in the final minutes of Saturday's exhibition contest at Division I Rider University, and concluded its preseason action with a 62-51 loss to Rider at the Alumni Gymnasium.
Senior point guard
Tynell Fortune (Blakeslee, Pa./Pocono Mountain West (California (PA))) scored a game-high 17 points with five three-pointers and four rebounds. Fortune is a senior point guard transfer from California (PA).
Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) returned from an injury-shortened season last year and scored nine points.
Josh Johnson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) and
Howard Sellars (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area (Saint Peter's)) each finished with eight points. Sellars also finished with six rebounds.
Kutztown's defense was sharp in the first half, limiting Rider to 30 percent shooting from the field at 6-for-20. KU held a seven-point lead midway through the second half, until Rider posted a 9-0 run built off KU turnovers.
Following a 44-44 tie, Rider scored 18 of the final 25 points. A significant difference in the box score was Rider's 27 attempted free throws compared to Kutztown's five.
The Golden Bears open their regular season with two non-conference games on Nov. 14-15 in Shepherdstown, W. Va. KU will take on Wheeling Jesuit and Shepherd on the road before its home-opener on Wednesday, Nov. 19 against Mansfield beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Keystone Arena.
