EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The 12th-ranked Kutztown University women's bowling team defeated fourth-ranked Vanderbilt University on Saturday to highlight the second day of the FDU Jamboree.
The Golden Bears (14-7) went 2-4 on Saturday as five of its six opponents were ranked in the top 15 in the nation. KU took down the Commodores (998-934) and Virginia State (964-857), but dropped matches to 15th-ranked Valparaiso (869-851), 13th-ranked North Carolina A&T (1022-920), third-ranked Sam Houston State (1061-928) and ninth-ranked Stephen F. Austin (1060-1004).
Kutztown bowled some of its best frames of the season on Saturday, but went up against the top competition in the country. It only fell by 18 pins to Valpo, lost despite posting a 1000+ score, and saw three of its opponents top the 1000-mark.
In total pinfall, Kutztown rates 14th with 10,078 and a 6-5 record. Fairleigh Dickinson led the way with a pinfall of 11,386 and a 7-4 record. Arkansas State is the only undefeated team in the tournament at 10-0.
Kutztown's averages went up significantly from Friday's opening round. Senior
Christine Gordon (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) posted the highest average of Kutztown's full-time starters at 202.3, and her 244 score against Vanderbilt played a significant role in the KU victory.
Amanda Wilson (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) held a team-high average of 206.3 in her three games.
Lauren Stamm (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) had three games over 200 and averaged 195.2 in her six games.
Allison Seidel (Morgantown, Pa./Cocalico) bowled the final five games and averaged a 194.4 to round out KU's top finishers.
Kutztown will face 19th-ranked Delaware State University at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2 in the final championship bracket.
