Field Hockey Hits Setback Out West

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Kutztown University field hockey team outshot Slippery Rock University and held a 12-3 advantage on penalty corners on Saturday, but was unable to find the back of the cage in a 2-0 loss on the road.

Slippery Rock (7-6, 5-4 PSAC) scored first in the 30th minute off a long run from 30 yards out, but the Golden Bears (6-6, 4-4) continued to apply heavy pressure in the second half with a 7-2 shots advantage in the final 35 minutes.

Kutztown also led 7-2 in penalty corners in the second half, but ironically enough, Slippery Rock scored off one of its two corner attempts in the second half for the 2-0 decision.

Of Kutztown's nine shots, just four were on goal to give Slippery Rock's Carlee DuMars the win in the cage. Golden Bear junior captain Kayla Denlinger (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) was tabbed with the loss with five saves.

The two teams remain in the heart of the playoff hunt as Slippery Rock currently ranks fifth in the standings, followed by KU at sixth in the final playoff spot.

The Golden Bears hit the road for their next game on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at nationally-ranked Shippensburg University. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
