KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University wrestling team took to the mat Friday night at Keystone Arena for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup against Millersville University. The Golden Bears went on to win 31-9, highlighted by #7
Evan Yenolevich (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh (Edinboro))'s return to competition.
Yenolevich, ranked seventh in the nation and second in the region at 133 pounds, hasn't wrestled in over two months since his squad upset #8 Pitt-Johnstown on Nov. 22. The redshirt senior was clearly anxious to get back into battle and wasted little time doing so. Yenolevich earned his first takedown three seconds into the match, immediately followed by a three-point nearfall. His opponent (Thomas Nulty) escaped, but Yenolevich countered with another quick takedown and a three-point nearfall to go up 10-1. Only 1:04 into the match, Yenolevich turned Nulty in the middle of the mat and pinned his opponent for the triumphant victory.
Kutztown (8-4, 3-1 PSAC) began the match up 12-0 after
Nick Lamoreaux (Bethesda, MD/Milton Hershey) (125 lbs.) and
Mitch Voelker (Shoemakersville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) (141 lbs.) kicked off the match with two wins by decision.
At 149 pounds,
Jackson Stabile (Lenhartsville, Pa./Hamburg) stepped in for an injured
Joe Esposito (Washington Township, N.J./Saint Augustine Prep), but dropped a tight 13-10 decision to Anthony White. Kutztown was forced to take an unexpected injury forfeit at 157 pounds, inching Millersville back into the match.
The Maraurders cut the deficit to 12-9, but two major decisions by
Bo Candelaria (Reading, Pa./Middletown) and
Andrew Kinney (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) in the 165- and 174-pound matches regained Kutztown's comfortable cushion.
Giovanni Ortiz (Reading, PA/Reading) and
Brandan Clark (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) cruised to wins by decision in the next two bouts to put KU up 26-9. In the final bout, #1
Ziad Haddad (Orefield, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (North Carolina)) dominated Elijah Flasher from the onset, ultimately earning the 17-0 technical-fall victory in 6:27 to improve to 14-0 on the season.
Kutztown will head west to Greensburg next Saturday, Feb. 8 to take on Seton Hill University at 3 p.m. and Alderson Broaddus University at 5 p.m.
