KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University wrestling team won four of the final five matches against the Mercyhurst University Lakers Friday night at Keystone Arena, but the comeback was a little too late as the visiting team grabbed the 20-15 upset victory in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup.
 
Seventh-ranked Kutztown (7-4, 2-1 PSAC) fell to an early 17-0 deficit in the opening five matches against 12th-ranked Mercyhurst (10-1, 3-0 PSAC) in a battle to sit atop the PSAC standings. KU secured three decisions and a pin in the final five, but it was not enough to mount the comeback.
 
Going into the match, the Golden Bears and the Lakers were the only two remaining teams undefeated in the conference. With the victory and only a few PSAC duals left, the Lakers will be the favorite to bring home a second-consecutive conference championship.
 
Bo Candelaria (Reading, Pa./Middletown) got things turned around for the Maroon and Gold in the 165-pound match, locking down a convincing 5-0 decision win over Clint Schaefer to finally get KU on the scoreboard. Andrew Kinney (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) dropped a tight 8-6 decision in the next bout, darkening the sky for the surging Golden Bears. Down 20-3 with three bouts left, KU would need three-straight pins to execute the come-from behind victory.
 
Giovanni Ortiz (Reading, PA/Reading) and Brandan Clark (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) hauled in six points with two wins by decision, eliminating KU's chances. Top-ranked Ziad Haddad (Orefield, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (North Carolina)) did add some excitement to end the match, pinning MU's Andrew Welton in 54 seconds, his fastest pin this season.
 
Kutztown will remain home next week, taking on fellow-PSAC foe Millersville University next Friday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. in Keystone Arena.
