KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team defeated seventh-ranked West Chester University 3-2 in the first home game of the season at Keystone Field Saturday afternoon, led by forwards junior Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and freshman Alaina Curry (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) with a combination of goals and assists.

In the first half, the Golden Bears (1-1, 1-1 PSAC) held off the offensive advance by West Chester (1-1, 1-1 PSAC), catching the Golden Rams offsides twice before a free kick by Dana Hunt lofted the ball in front of goal where Ashley Sayor scored the first goal of the game in the 11th minute.

The Golden Bears opened the second half with high intensity and secured a complete turnaround. A shot by Costello was blocked by Golden Ram keeper Alex Srolis, but Curry was quick to act on the rebound and scored at 65:52 to tie the game.

Anxious to put distance on the scoreboard, Costello tallied two more shots, including a header, before she scored the second goal for KU from 25 yards out to put the Golden Bears ahead 2-1 in the 71st minute.

As the game continued to heat up, KU goalkeeper Alina Rakiewicz (Denver, PA/Cocalico) made three saves to keep Kutztown in the lead. In the 89th minute, a cross from Costello gave opportunity to Curry to score the third goal for KU off a header.

With less than a minute remaining in the game, the Golden Rams utilized a break away by Cara Deola to score a second goal, but ultimately fell 3-2.

The Golden Bears return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 10, to face Millersville University at Keystone Field for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
