GREENSBURG, Pa. – Two second-half goals and a stellar defensive effort lifted the Kutztown University women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Seton Hill University on Wednesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup.
Following a scoreless first half in which the Golden Bears (2-3, 2-3 PSAC) allowed only one shot by the Griffins (2-3, 2-3), junior forward
Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored 27 seconds into the second half for her second goal of the season.
Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose) assisted Costello on the score.
The quick strike was a good sign from Kutztown after it allowed a goal to Shippensburg last week 22 seconds in the second half in a one-goal setback.
Kutztown's defensive line of
Katie Oliveri (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg),
Sam Busillo (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove),
Katie Miller (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), and
Alyssa Donahue (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional (Mercer County CC)) kept the pressure off of goalkeeper
Alina Rakiewicz (Denver, PA/Cocalico) throughout the entire game. Despite taking seven corner kicks in the game, Seton Hill managed just one shot per half in the shutout victory. KU out-shot the Griffins 15-2 for the game.
Freshman
Kailee Rottet (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua (Binghamton)) gave Kutztown an insurance goal off the bench with her first collegiate goal in the 64th minute on an assist from
Kim Nale (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee).
The Golden Bears return home to start its season-long, four-game homestand on Saturday, Sept. 21 against Pitt-Johnstown beginning at 1 p.m.
