KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore
Ricky Gorrell (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) of the 13th-ranked Kutztown University baseball team hit a walk-off single to seal an 11-10 victory over Bloomsburg University in game one, and Kutztown used an eight-run third inning to coast to an 11-4 win in game two of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at North Campus Field on Friday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (20-5, 9-1 PSAC) had to come-from-behind in both victories over the Huskies (4-21, 0-10). KU overcame an 8-2 deficit in game one, capped off with a walk-off single by Gorrell that went over the center fielder's head to score
Thomas Romano (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) from second.
Romano and
John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)) each went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader.
GAME ONE
Most of the scoring in the opener occurred in the first three innings, but the game was ultimately decided in the final two. With Kutztown leading 9-8 heading into the sixth, Bloomsburg plated two runs and took the lead on a two-out, pinch-hit single by James Ott to give Bloomsburg a 10-9 lead.
Junior
Brett Hauck (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) led off the bottom of the sixth with a double to right field, was sacrificed to third on a bunt by
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights), and tied the game on a sacrifice fly by
Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn).
KU walked two batters in the seventh with one out to bring senior right hander
Billy Felo (Dauphin, PA/Central Dauphin/Chesapeake College) out of the bullpen. Felo forced a groundball to first base, and struck out the final batter of the inning to get Kutztown out of the jam.
Romano led off the seventh with a double to deep left center field. Two batters later with a full count and two outs, Gorrell ripped a ball to deep center field that went over the center fielder's head, who was playing shallow to attempt to throw out Romano, and brought in the game-winning run for the Golden Bears.
Romano had a career-best 3-for-3 performance at the plate in game one with two RBI.
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) also had a multi-hit game (2-for-4), as Dockins recorded a game-high three RBI.
Neither team's starters made it past the third inning. Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead in the first off a double by Nick Eversole. Stoudt evened the game with an RBI double of his own in the bottom half of the inning, but the Huskies responded with four runs in the second including a bases-clearing triple by Brad Smith and an RBI double by Eversole that went off the fence to give BU a 5-1 advantage.
Bloomsburg scored three more runs in the third to take an 8-2 lead that brought the Golden Bears into a team huddle leading up to its next at-bat. KU used the extra motivation to plate five runs in the third and cut the lead to one (8-7). Albaugh hit an RBI double, two Golden Bears were hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Dockins hit a two-run single through the left side for Kutztown.
Felo picked up the win for Kutztown, his second of the season.
GAME TWO
Albaugh belted his first home run of the season to give Kutztown a 2-0 lead in the first inning. However, it was answered with four runs by Bloomsburg, giving it a 4-2 lead through the top half of the third inning.
Kutztown opened the inning with six straight base hits to plate five runs. Following a groundout and a walk, Hauck, Stoudt, and Albaugh knocked in KU's final three runs of the inning to give it a commanding 10-4 lead.
Gorrell drove in Dockins with an RBI single in the fourth to close the scoring in Friday's nightcap.
Dockins went 3-for-3 at the plate for KU in the nightcap. Hauck, Stoudt, Albaugh, and Gorrell all notched two hits as KU ripped 13 hits as a team. Albaugh had a game-high three RBI.
Colin Holmes (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) picked up the win for KU with six strikeouts in five innings on the mound. He moves to 3-0 on the season as Friday marked the first time this season Holmes pitched on the opening day of a weekend doubleheader.
Dave King (Tremont, PA/Minersville) and
Ryan Clow (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) pitched the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, and allowed just one hit and one walk.
Kutztown closes out the doubleheader at Bloomsburg on Saturday, April 6 beginning at 1 p.m.
