EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The 16th-ranked Kutztown University baseball team opened its series with East Stroudsburg University on Friday afternoon but found it difficult to get any offensive production in a pair of losses in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action at Mitterling Field. Kutztown dropped the first game 5-1, and the second game 7-1.
The Golden Bears (27-11, 12-6 PSAC East) rank third in the East after being jumped by the Warriors (27-12, 11-7) through Friday's games.
In game one, senior
Todd Rubendall (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) went 2-for-3 at the plate for Kutztown.
Junior
John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)) gave the Golden Bears an early 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI single to score
Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn). Unfortunately for the Golden Bears, it was all the offense they could produce in the opener.
ESU scored four runs in the bottom half of the third as two Kutztown errors aided the Warriors' big inning.
Kutztown's bullpen gave up just one earned run.
Damon Valloreo (Vincentown, N.J./Burlington CCC) and
Dave King (Tremont, PA/Minersville) each pitched scoreless innings in relief for KU as starter
Jordan Gottshall (Birdsboro, PA/Exeter Township) was tabbed with the loss.
ESU pitcher Brian Ernst struck out 10 batters for the third straight game and allowed just three Kutztown hits.
In game two, ESU scored the first seven runs of the game before the Golden Bears could respond. It scored four in the first and three in the second as Kutztown was unable to mount a comeback.
As a team, Kutztown recorded five hits to East Stroudsburg's seven. On the mound,
Connor Wing (West Chester, PA/Unionville) pitched a team-high three innings and allowed one run as four Kutztown pitchers were used.
Gilbert Vega (Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCaskey) and
Ryan Clow (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) had scoreless innings in relief for Kutztown.
Ryan Lubreski moved to 6-0 on the hill for the Warriors. He pitched a complete game and struck out seven batters.
The Golden Bears will hope to even the series on Saturday, April 27 as they host the Warriors for Senior Day at North Campus Field beginning at 1 p.m.
