NORRISTOWN, Pa. – The 16th-ranked Kutztown University baseball team never trailed Wednesday evening as it coasted to a 9-4 non-conference victory over Chestnut Hill College under the lights at Latshaw-McCarthy Field.
The Golden Bears (27-9) had three players with multi-hit games and three players pitch scoreless inning against the Griffins (16-22). Sophomore
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored from the leadoff spot. Fellow sophomore
Ricky Gorrell (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) also went 2-for-4 with a run scored, a walk, and an RBI.
Junior shortstop
John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)) was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a run and a pair of RBI off a two-run single in the fourth.
On the mound, junior
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) pitched four innings as the starter and allowed two runs, neither of them were earned. He tied a season-high with five strikeouts.
In relief, senior
Tom Neely (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) picked up the win with a scoreless fifth inning that took just nine pitches.
James Rossi (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) pitched the sixth and picked up two strikeouts with no runs allowed.
Corey Snyder (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) used just seven pitches and allowed one hit in the ninth inning to give Kutztown the win.
Sophomore
Travis Kreitz (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) gave Kutztown a 1-0 lead in the first with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Martinez knocked in a run with two outs in the second, and senior
Todd Rubendall (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) walked in a run in the third to give KU a 3-0 lead.
A leadoff throwing error by the Kutztown third baseman led to two unearned runs for Chestnut Hill in the bottom half of the third to cut Kutztown's lead to one (3-2).
The Golden Bears responded with three runs the following inning. All coming with two outs, Kreitz knocked in his second run of the game with a single the opposite way to left field to score Gorrell from third.
Brandon Hickey (Mountville, PA/Hempfield) then dropped down a bunt single to load the bases for Dockins, who hit a single up the middle to score
Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) and Kreitz giving Kutztown a 6-2 lead.
A pair of bunts drove in two more runs for the Golden Bears in the fifth inning. Gorrell had a bunt single and
Joe Peters (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown (Delaware Technical CC)) had a sacrifice bunt to extend Kutztown's lead to 8-2.
The teams traded out base hits in the seventh and eighth innings to close out the scoring Wednesday night.
Kutztown, who found out it was ranked fourth in the first NCAA regional poll of the season earlier on Wednesday, returns to conference play this weekend as it takes on East Stroudsburg on Friday, April 26 on the road beginning at 1 p.m.
