READING, Pa. – The 27th-ranked Kutztown University baseball team used a four-run first inning to guide it to a 6-1 win in its annual game at FirstEnergy Stadium against Albright College in a non-conference game on Monday evening.
Monday marked the 11th straight year the two teams met to play at the home of the Reading Fightin' Phils, the Double-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. With the win, Kutztown moved to 9-2 in the all-time series with the Lions.
Travis Kreitz (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) and
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) each had multi-hit games for the Golden Bears (26-9). Kreitz went 2-for-3 with a single, double, and two runs scored. Stoudt had a hit in both of his at-bats with two runs and two RBI.
Senior
Gilbert Vega (Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCaskey) started on the mound for Kutztown and managed his way through the first inning with no problem allowing just one hit. Fellow senior
Damon Valloreo (Vincentown, N.J./Burlington CCC) pitched the second. Albright put two runners in scoring position but could not manage any runs against the southpaw. Valloreo extended his scoreless streak to 5.2 innings out of the bullpen.
James Rossi (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) pitched a 1-2-3 third inning for Kutztown. In the bottom of the third, Kreitz led off the inning with a double over the left fielders head. He was knocked in on a triple by Stoudt to the deepest part of the left center gap to give KU a 5-0 lead.
With Kutztown using one pitcher per inning and taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning, Vega was tabbed with the win pushing his record to 2-0 this season.
Connor Wing (West Chester, PA/Unionville) pitched the fourth for Kutztown and despite allowing a pair of base runners, got out of the inning as
Brandon Shurr (Bernville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) made all three outs in center field. Wing has not allowed a run in 11.1 innings in relief this season and has given up six hits.
Albright plated a run in the fifth inning. Following a leadoff walk, Brandon Triantos stole second and advanced to third as Kutztown's second baseman was unable to keep the ball in front of him as it went into center field. Triantos scored on a groundout to second base as the run was unearned for KU pitcher
Dave King (Tremont, PA/Minersville).
Seniors
Jordan Garcia (Mount Carmel, PA/Fleetwood) and
J.R. Seader (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway/ Maryland-Baltimore County) pitched scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh innings for the Golden Bears. Freshman
Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) took over for the eighth and struck out the side while allowing one walk. Senior
