Kutztown 17, Philadelphia 2 (HTML Box Score)

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team scored in each of the first seven innings on its way to its highest scoring game of the season with a 17-2 non-conference win over Philadelphia University on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Golden Bears' (25-9) 17 runs are a season-best off a season-high-tying 18 hits. Both of the previous highs were set against Adelphi on Apr. 3.  Kutztown used 24 players against the Rams (17-24-1).

Leadoff hitter Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) went 4-for-4 with five RBI and two walks for Kutztown. It is the second time that Martinez has gone 4-for-4 at the plate and his five RBI are a career-best for the sophomore. He also scored three runs.

Senior Todd Rubendall (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) started at third for the second straight game and went 3-for-3 at the plate. Combined with his performance against Wilmington earlier this week, Rubendall is 7-for-7 over the last two games.

Sophomore Brandon Hickey (Mountville, PA/Hempfield) notched the first three-hit game of his career as he also scored two runs. Senior catcher Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) was the fourth Golden Bear with a multi-hit game with a 2-for-2 day at the plate with three RBI.

Junior Jordan Gottshall (Birdsboro, PA/Exeter Township) rebounded from a shaky start last week with four innings and a season-high seven strikeouts while allowing just two hits. He retired the first eight batters he faced and the only runs he allowed came off a two-out, two-run double in the third inning.

Kutztown's bullpen hurled five shutout innings as four of the five pitchers didn't allow a hit. Senior left-hander Damon Valloreo (Vincentown, N.J./Burlington CCC) picked up the win pitching a 1-2-3 fifth inning with a strikeout. He extended his scoreless streak to 4.2 innings out of the bullpen.

Connor Wing (West Chester, PA/Unionville) and Brandon Shurr (Bernville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) pitched the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, as Shurr tallied a pair of strikeouts. Wing has not allowed a run in 10.1 innings in relief this season and has given up five hits.

Senior Gilbert Vega (Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCaskey) pitched the eighth and junior Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) closed out the game for the Golden Bears with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. It marks the third scoreless appearance for Stoudt on the mound this season.

Senior J.R. Seader (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway/ Maryland-Baltimore County) was one of five Kutztown pitchers to earn an at-bat on Sunday. Not only did Seader reach base with a walk, he walked with the bases loaded to record his first career RBI.

Kutztown scored in each of the first seven innings including multiple runs in five of them. KU plated two runs in the first and second innings highlighted by RBI doubles from Albaugh and Martinez.

Thomas Romano (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) extended the lead to 5-0 in the third with an RBI single, as the Rams responded with two in the bottom half of the third. Kutztown scored two in the fourth and four in the fifth to take an 11-2 lead. In the fifth inning, Martinez, Joe Peters (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown (Delaware Technical CC)), and Albaugh knocked in runs.

A two-out RBI single by Martinez in the sixth gave KU a double-digit lead (12-2). Kutztown closed Sunday's scoring with five runs in the seventh inning. Ryan Clow (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) and Ricky Gorrell (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) each had RBI hits, as Corey Snyder (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove), Martinez, and Seader walked in runs.

The Golden Bears return to action on Monday, Apr. 22 for their annual game at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, home of the Fightin' Phils, for a 6:30 game against Albright College.
