LYNDHURST, N.J. – Not many people may know how to turn in a timely hit more than
Ricky Gorrell (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford). Already with two walk-off hits this season, the sophomore third baseman dropped a perfect bunt in front of the catcher in the third inning to score the go-ahead run as the 27th-ranked Kutztown University baseball team defeated Felician College 1-0 Wednesday night under the lights.
The Golden Bears (24-8) worked two walks and a wild pitch to put two runners in scoring position in the third. Gorrell then laid down the bunt and with the runner not even getting a head start from third, he managed not only to plate the runner but beat out the single up the line. Kutztown was aggressive on the base paths in the inning with four stolen bases including a double steal.
The bunt was part of a 3-for-4 game for Gorrell. He also had a bunt single in the first inning, and a single in the fifth inning. Gorrell had two stolen bases as Kutztown swiped six as a team.
Freshman
Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) started for the Golden Bears for the first time this season in his 13th appearance. In four innings of work, he allowed only one hit with a career-high five strikeouts.
James Rossi (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and
J.R. Seader (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway/ Maryland-Baltimore County) each pitched two shutout innings in relief for Kutztown. Rossi pitched the fifth and sixth inning and only allowed one hit with two strikeouts. Seader did not allow a hit in the seventh of eighth innings and tabbed one strikeout.
Senior
Billy Felo (Dauphin, PA/Central Dauphin/Chesapeake College) closed the door with his second consecutive save. He allowed one hit in the ninth inning.
The shutout was Kutztown's fifth of the season. Swarmer, Rossi, and Seader have all been a part of three of them.
Felician used five pitchers, as starter Chris Falcone pitched five innings and allowed the third-inning run. As a team, Felician managed just three hits.
The Golden Bears turn around for another road game tomorrow, Thursday April 18 at Wilmington University in Delaware beginning at 3 p.m.
