KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore catcher
Joe Peters (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown (Delaware Technical CC)) hit his first home run as a member of the Golden Bears on Saturday as the 12th-ranked Kutztown University baseball team fell short in a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division games to Millersville University at North Campus Field. KU dropped the opener 3-1, and the nightcap 5-4.
Peters' solo shot came in the seventh inning of game one. It was Kutztown's (22-7, 11-3 PSAC East) first and only run of the opening game against the Marauders (26-9, 9-1).
It was a low scoring game one as the pitchers made few mistakes on the hill. For Kutztown, junior right-hander
Jason Henderson (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) notched six strikeouts in 5.1 innings while allowing three runs. His only blemish occurred in the fourth inning when he hit the first batter and allowed a two-run home run to Dan Johnson the following at-bat.
For Millersville, Tim Mayza improved to 8-1 on the year with a complete game. He also struck out six batters while allowing five hits and one walk.
Millersville led by as many as three runs as it also scored a run off a sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning. MU only had six hits, five of which came from Johnson (3-for-3) and Zach Stone (2-for-2).
Offense dominated the first two innings of game two. Millersville took the early 1-0 lead with a two-out fielding error on Kutztown's shortstop to score the runner from third.
Kutztown responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. It loaded the bases with one out off singles by
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) and
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) and a walk by
Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn). Martinez tied the game at 1-1 by taking off for home on a wild pitch. Peters and
Thomas Romano (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) each had RBI singles in the inning to give KU a 3-1 advantage after one.
With runners on first and second in the second inning, Millersville's Evan King cut the KU lead to one with an RBI single. Kurt Seiders gave Millersville back the lead with a two-run double down the left field line the following at-bat.
From there, pitchers
Colin Holmes (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) and Tad Barton settled down and didn't allow any additional runs through the fourth. Holmes started in his first game at North Campus Field of the year, and pitched four innings for Kutztown.
Senior right-hander
J.R. Seader (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway/ Maryland-Baltimore County) relieved Holmes in the fifth and struck out three batters in 1.2 innings on the mound. However, he gave up what ended up being the game-winning hit on a two-out RBI double by King to give Millersville a 5-4 lead through five.
Kutztown threatened in the sixth inning by loading the bases with one out. Peters and Kreitz singled, and
John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)) was hit by a pitch.
Ricky Gorrell (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 5-4, but a groundout to shortstop the next at-bat ended the inning.
Freshman right-hander
Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) was effective out of the bullpen for KU. He did not allow a hit in 1.1 innings and notched one strikeout.
Millersville's Adam Zipko picked up his sixth save of the season with 1.1 innings of work. He struck out two of the three KU batters in the seventh.
Stoudt and Peters had multi-hit games for Kutztown, as Romano stretched his current hitting streak to 11 games.
The Golden Bears close out the series with Millersville on Sunday, April 14 on the road beginning at 1 p.m.
