LYNDHURST, NJ – The Kutztown University baseball team used nine different pitchers on its way to a 5-3 victory over Felician College Wednesday afternoon in a nine-inning, non-conference game at Lyndhurst Recreational Complex.
With the win, the Golden Bears (14-4) stretched their winning streak to eight games. Kutztown's pitching staff has not allowed more than three runs in six of its last seven games and each of its last six.
Kutztown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and did not trail for the entire game. Sophomore outfielder
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn), this week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Player of the Week, led off the game with an infield single. He stole second, was sacrificed to third on a bunt by
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights), and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn).
Stoudt was also the starting pitcher for KU. He retired the side in the first on three groundouts.
Felician tied the game in the third with a sacrifice fly of its own. Two singles and a wild pitch by Kutztown's
Gilbert Vega (Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCaskey) set up the run.
The Golden Bears responded with three runs in the fourth inning. Albaugh opened the inning with a single, and KU loaded the bases with no outs off a hit by pitch and a bunt.
A wild pitch plated KU's second run and advanced the runners to second and third.
John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)) drove in
Travis Kreitz (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) to give KU a 3-1 lead, and
Brandon Shurr (Bernville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) notched an RBI to score
Brandon Hickey (Mountville, PA/Hempfield) to give KU a 4-1 lead, a lead it would not relinquish for the rest of the game.
Senior
J.R. Seader (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway/ Maryland-Baltimore County) took over for Vega in the bottom of the fourth, as Vega picked up the win for Kutztown on the mound. Seader struck out the final two batters of the inning.
Stoudt drove in Kutztown's final run of the day in the fifth inning. KU pitchers
James Rossi (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee),
Connor Wing (West Chester, PA/Unionville), and
Karl Von Kiel (Macungie, PA/West Mount) kept the Golden Falcons scoreless and held them to one hit from the fifth to seventh inning.
Felician brought the lead to two (5-3) with two runs in the eighth. A leadoff triple got the Golden Falcons started. Following a pop out, Felician hit a RBI triple and an RBI groundout to bring the game to 5-3.
Dave King (Tremont, PA/Minersville) came in to pitch the ninth and picked up his first save of the season for Kutztown. He walked his first batter to bring the tying run to the plate, but King responded with a strikeout and two groundouts to seal Kutztown's eighth straight win.
Kutztown tallied four hits while allowing six. While Vega picked up the win for KU, Felician's Dean Loucka was charged with the loss. He pitched the first four innings and allowed four of KU's five runs.
The Golden Bears return to action on Friday, March 29 to face Shippensburg University at North Campus Field for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
