Women's Tennis Drops Close Match to Centre College

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Senior Ridhima Borooah (Guwahati-Assam, India/Modern School; Barakhamba Road; New Delhi) of the Kutztown University women's tennis team won her third straight singles match in straight sets, but Kutztown dropped a 5-4 decision to Centre College Thursday morning at Hilton Head Island.
 
The Golden Bears (1-5) got off to a great start in singles play with all three of their top seeds earning straight-set victories. Borooah earned her third in a row and team-leading fifth of the season with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kathryn Hays. She is now 5-1 on the season.
 
Sophomore Hannah Pipkin (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) earned a 7-6 tiebreaking win the first set that sparked her to a 6-4 win in the second set for KU. Senior Rachel Grula (Drums, PA/Hazleton Area) also won in singles for the Golden Bears with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Katie Howard. Each team won three singles matches.
 
In doubles play, Grula and freshman Chelsea Davis (Spring City, Pa./Spring-Ford) teamed for earned Kutztown's lone victory, an 8-6 win over Kimberly Randall and Abby Tudor.  Kutztown's top two seeds in doubles competition fell 8-3 and 8-2, respectively, as Centre picked up its second win of the season.
 
Kutztown returns to action on Friday, March 22 for the final day of competition of its spring break trip in Hilton Head. It will face Converse at 8 a.m. and the University of Nebraska at Omaha at 3 p.m.
