Eight Hurlers Combine on Shutout Win

Box Score

HAMPTON, Va. – Eight different pitchers combined on a six-hit shutout as Kutztown University topped Bloomsburg 2-0 at the Builder Invitational.

Tom Neely (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) got the start and was the only pitcher to throw more than one inning, allowing one hit and a walk in two scoreless frames.  Gilbert Vega (Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCaskey) pitched stranded a pair of runners in the third before James Rossi (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and Dave King (Tremont, PA/Minersville) pitched perfect innings in the fourth and fifth. Jordan Gottshall (Birdsboro, PA/Exeter Township) pitched out of trouble in the sixth.  J.R. Seader (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway/ Maryland-Baltimore County) and Damon Valloreo (Vincentown, N.J./Burlington CCC) kept the shutout intact and Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) notched his second save, striking out the side in the ninth.

King was credited with the win, the first of his KU career.

The Golden Bear offense scored in the bottom of the first when Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) singled with one and scored on a balk.

In the second inning, Brett Hauck (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) had an RBI groundout to drive in KU's second run. Thomas Romano (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) scored on the play after he singled to lead off the inning.

The two runs proved more than enough Kutztown's deep pitching staff that allowed just eight total baserunners. In three different innings, the Huskies moved a runner into scoring position with two outs, but each time KU escaped unscathed.

John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)) had two hits for Kutztown.

Joey Casselberry had four of Bloomsburg's six hits.

Kyle Hunter took the loss for BU. He started and pitched four innings, allowing two runs on five hits and struck out two. Tyler Hill through four no-hit innings in relief.

Stoudt's single in the game gives him at least one hit in all six games this season. The first baseman is hitting .542 over that span.

The Golden Bears are idle until heading to Virginia State on March 9.
