Millersville Outlasts Golden Bears in Overtime

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Kutztown University's Micah Fraction (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) scored 30 points for the fifth time in the last 11 games, but third place Millersville came from behind for a 66-59 win over the Golden Bears in PSAC East action at Keystone Arena.

KU led by two after Fraction drove to the hole and was fouled for a three-point play that made it 52-50 with 3:08 to play.  With just under two minutes to go, Elijah Obade tied the game with a layup.  After the teams traded missed shots, Millersville called a timeout with 13 seconds to play.  When play resumed, Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) stole the ball in front of the Kutztown bench to give the Golden Bears possession with seven seconds to play.  KU came out of a timeout, and Fraction got the ball but his drive into the paint was unsuccessful, sending the game to overtime.

Kutztown struck first in the extra period, but Larry Grant nailed a three to make it 55-54 in favor of Millersville with 3:21 to play.  Tracy Peal reclaimed the lead for the Golden Bears, but Brandon Brown, who assisted on Grant's three, hit one of his own for a 58-56 MU lead with 2:11 left.

KU trailed 13-7 early, but a three by Fraction started a 20-8 run for Kutztown.  Ryan Connolly (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area)'s fourth three of the first half put the Golden Bears ahead 27-21 before Kyle Richardson hit a late three to make it 27-24 at the intermission.

Kutztown stayed in front throughout the second half and led 47-41 after Kenny Battle (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter) took an assist from Brooks with 5:12 to go.  The Marauders answered with seven points from Anthony Coleman during a 9-2 run that put MU ahead 50-49 with 3:20 to play, setting up the dramatic finish and overtime.

Fraction finished with 30 points, fueled by an 11-of-11 performance from the foul line. He also had six rebounds and finished the game with 972 career points. 

Connolly scored 12 of his 16 in the first half.  He finished the game 6-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-6 from long range.  He added six rebounds and three steals.  Peal had 10 rebounds, while Brooks chipped in with eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and a blocked shot.

Brooks, Connolly and Fraction eached played all 45 minutes in the contest.

Jaymes Miller, who finished 8-of-9 from the floor, led Millersville with 18 points, while Obade and Coleman added 12 apiece.  Coleman also had six assists and seven steals in the contest.  

Kutztown's perimeter defense hounded the Marauders into a 5-of-24 effort from three-point range.  

The Golden Bears held a 42-33 rebounding advantage and all five starters had at least five rebounds for KU.  

With the loss, Kutztown is tied with Mansfield for the sixth and final playoff spot in the PSAC East with three games to play.

The Golden Bears host Cheyney on February 20 at 7:30 p.m.
