Game Notes
KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team aim for a 2-0 start on the road, and break a three-game losing streak in the process, as it travels to face Mansfield University for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
The Golden Bears (1-3, 0-1 PSAC East) won their season opener on the road, but have since then lost three games at Keystone Arena. This includes an 85-66 loss to Philadelphia University before Thanksgiving. The game saw freshman
Josh Johnson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) score in double digits for his fourth consecutive game, earning him PSAC East Freshman of the Week honors.
Johnson is one of three players (Brooks and Peal) to lead the team with 13.3 points per game. Meanwhile, Mansfield's (1-5, 0-2) Joe Bell averages 17.0 points per game.
With no worse than 11 points or six rebounds in any game, Johnson stands out clearly as the team's sixth man. With 12 points against Philadelphia, Johnson became the first KU freshman since Dave Ben (in the 2005-06 season) to score in double digits in each of his first four games. Kevin Handy (seven in the 1999-2000 season) was the last KU freshman to 10+ points in each of his first five games.
Along with Johnson, senior guard
Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) rank in the top five in PSAC with a 54.1 field goal percentage. Brooks is truly picking up his game as of late, scoring 17 points against East Stroudsburg and 18 against Philadelphia in his last two games. Brooks also average 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.
With Brooks and Johnson, sophomore forward Tracy Peal co-leads the team with 13.3 points per game. Improving his game shape from last season, Peal now looks like arguably the top focal point offensively after Brooks. Peal leads the team in both field goal and free throws attempts. He also has 5.0 rebounds per game.
Bell poses the biggest threat to the Golden Bears. He averages 17.0 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Both lead the Mounties. Bell shoots 49.3 from the floor, but he also gets to the free throw line on average 7.3 times per game. He shoots 72.7 percent from the charity stripe. His 44 free throw attempts rank in the top 10 in the PSAC.
Following its game against Mansfield, Kutztown returns home on Saturday, Dec. 7 to face West Chester University at Keystone Arena beginning at 3 p.m.
