KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 setback to West Chester University at Keystone Field on Tuesday afternoon in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) quarterfinals.
The third-seeded Golden Bears (12-6) were recently ranked 25th in the
NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II National Poll and were first to make it on the scoreboard over the sixth-seeded Golden Rams (12-6), when
Taylor Higgins (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) scored in the 21st minute on an assist by
Megan Frailer (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), this week's PSAC Athlete of the Week.
The Golden Rams answered the goal less than eight minutes later when Lexi Lentz took a corner kick, leading to a header shot by Carly Yost that was blocked, and then a shot by Rachel Jackson that was saved. KU goalkeeper
Alina Rakiewicz (Denver, PA/Cocalico) lost control of the ball however, and Jackson put a foot on the ball again to score the first goal for WCU.
The following minutes were filled with a series of corner kicks by WCU, until Yost successfully headed in a ball from Lentz at 33:28 to score the second goal for the Golden Rams, taking the teams to halftime leading 2-1.
Each team put in equal efforts at scoring again in the second half, tallying five shots apiece, but the second half ended goalless.
Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield),
Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose), and
Logan Kramer (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor (Arkansas State)) each tallied two shots for KU, and the Golden Bears finished with a total of eight shots to WCU's 11.
The fate of the Golden Bears continuing in play this season in the NCAA Atlantic Regionals will be announced Monday, Nov. 11, in the live Division II Women's Soccer Selection Show on www.NCAA.com.
