Women's Hoops Tangles with Fordham in Season-Opening Exhibition

BRONX, N.Y. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team opened its 2013-14 campaign with an exhibition contest at the historic Rose Hill Gymnasium against Division I Fordham University on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears hung with the Rams for the majority of the first half, but went on to drop an 86-49 decision.
 
Junior Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) led the way offensively with 12 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Bears. She was 5-for-11 from the field and dished out a pair of assists. Also scoring in double figures was Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) with 10 points. She drained two three-pointers with four rebounds and three assists.
 
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) grabbed a team-best nine rebounds that helped Kutztown win the battle of the boards, 42-38. The Rams were able to dial in from long distance though as they drained 12 three-pointers, seven of which from Hannah Missry, compared to Kutztown's 3-for-6 performance from beyond the arc.
 
All five starters scored for Kutztown in the opening minutes as it led 11-9 at the first media timeout. The teams battled within three points for much of the first half leading up to the Golden Bears taking a game-high, four-point lead (20-16) at the 7:11 mark of the first half.
 
The Golden Bears led 22-19 with less than six minutes to play in the half, however, Fordham closed the half on a 21-3 run to take a 39-25 lead into the locker room. The lead remained at 14 or more points for the remainder of the game.
 
Four players finished in double figures in scoring for Fordham. Samantha Clark notched a double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds, Missry scored 21 of her 25 points from three-point range, and Danielle Burns and Abigail Corning rounded out the scoring at 13 and 11 points, respectively.
 
The Golden Bears open the regular season in West Virginia at the Glenville Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9. They will face West Liberty (Nov. 8) and Glenville (Nov. 9) in their opening weekend.
